Julius Caesar was born in 100 B.C. in Rome. His family was well known, but they were not rich.

At the age of six, Caesar began his education. He was taught by a tutor named Marcus Antonius Gnipho.

He learned how to read and write. He also learned about Roman law and speaking in public. These skills helped him to later become a politician.

Julius Caesar's father died when he was 16. He was now the leader of his family and was responsible for his sister Julia and his mother Aurelia.

When Julius Caesar was 17, he married Cornelia.
She was the daughter of a powerful politician in Rome.

The dictator of Rome, Sulla, ordered Julius Caesar to divorce Cornelia. If Caesar did not, he might have lost his property.

Caesar escaped to the military. He first fought in Asia, then he fought in Cilicia.

Caesar returned to Rome after the death of Sulla. He became a military hero from his time in the army.

He kept going up in the ranks of the Roman government. He became a prosecuting advocate. The people of Rome loved him because he was an excellent public speaker.

Julius became Consul, the highest rank, at age 40. He was only able to be the Consul for one year.

Afterwards, he became governor of the province of Gaul. He also became considered one of the best Roman war generals.

Politics in Rome became very worried when Caesar was in Gaul. Caesar and Pompey became rivals soon after.
