We know that the Earth is approximately 4.6 billion years old. Scientists can determine this through radiometric dating.
But first, what is radiation?
Radiation is essentially energy in motion. There are three different types of radiation: alpha (α), beta (β)and gamma (γ) rays, all originating from the nucleus of an unstable atom.
2

3

Alpha Radiation (α)
A stream of positively charged particles consisting of 2 protons and 2 neutrons (identical to the nuclei of a helium atom).
It is a weak form of radiation that cannot penetrate more than a few pieces of paper, or a person's hand.

5

Beta Radiation (β)
A stream of high-speed electrons ejected from the nucleus of a radioactive atom. They can penetrate skin, however, are blocked by a sheet of aluminium.
6
7

Gamma Radiation (γ)
High-frequency electromagnetic waves which carry a large amount of energy. These waves have high penetration power and can penetrate skin and aluminium before being stopped by lead.
