Finn was a 7 year old boy who lived with his mother and father in a big house with a big yard. He had a pet dog named Rex and a baby sister named Emma. Between me and you, Finn liked Rex a lot better.

Finn lived in a small town where everyone dressed almost the same and everyone spoke the same language, but that was all about to change. His dad just got a new job in a different country. Finn was moving to Japan!

Finn didn’t know what to expect when he got there. Did they even speak English? Do they even have a McDonald’s? Where was he going to get his happy meal at now?

7
When Finn finally got to Japan, he was shocked and sad. He went from having his own room, to now sharing a room with his baby sister. His family went from living in a huge house with an awesome backyard, to a small apartment on the 9th floor.

Finn’s first day at his new school was the worst. He didn’t know anyone! He didn’t speak Japanese, so he didn’t understand any of the others kids. He didn’t know if they were being nice or mean. He hoped they were trying to be nice.

Everyone in the school dressed the same. They also had to take off their shoes when they entered the classroom. He watched as the other children would bow to the teacher before sitting down. It was the strangest thing he’d ever seen before.

When Finn got home, he went straight to his room. He hated his parents for making him leave his friends and his school. He just wanted to stay in his room the rest of the night and play Call of Duty with his friends back in Idaho.

15
Finn’s mom came to check on him before bed. He told her all about the kids bowing to the teacher and that they took their shoes off before class. He laughed at them and called them strange. She told him to remember, he was in a different country and everyone has different ways of doing different things. She told him that bowing to a teacher was a sign of respect.

17
During lunch the next day, Finn sat next to a boy from his class who also was sitting alone eating lunch. When he opened his lunch box he found an extra Little Debbie cake and a note from his mom.
