Always ask permission before you pet a dog. If you would like to pet someone's dog, all you have to do is politely ask the owner, "May I pet your dog?"

You should never pet a dog that you don’t know on top of their head. A dog may become fearful of a hand coming up over their head.

Make a fist and let the dog sniff the back of your hand first before scratching them under their chin.

Never, ever put your face up to a strange dog. Dogs usually don't like you in their face. A dog can bite you very easily when your face is so close.

You should never hit your dog. Hitting your dog will only make him afraid of you and he may even get aggressive and bite you.

You should avoid playing tug of war or wrestling with your dog. This will encourage aggressive behavior from your dog. Children shouldn't play rough with their dog. Be gentle.

Don’t pet a dog that is sleeping. You might startle him and he might bite you!

You should never tease a dog with a stick because you may end up being bit.

Don't give a dog a treat with your fingers. They might accidentally grab your fingers and treat at the same time. Use the palm of your hand to create a bowl and let the dog eat the treat that way.
