Once upon a time,
Roaming the savannas far way,
Lived a family of giraffes,
Who ate the leaves and grass all day.
George and Gina, two short-necked parents,
Had a small calf and named her Gabby.
She was your average young giraffe, always playful
But once she grew they noticed something a bit wacky.

Once Gabby had grown,
Everyone could see
She could easily reach
the highest acacia tree.
By the time she was one,
The lengthy neck she had,
Was greater than any other giraffe’s,
Much greater than her mom or dad’s.

At first, Gabby was upset with her height,
And stuck out wherever she went.
She believed her neck to be a burden,
To eat or drink, it was always painfully bent.
But then one day, Gabby realized something big.
She looked at a tree, untouched by teeth.
And found she could easily much away at the leaves
If she stood underneath.

No longer did Gabby ache when she ate.
For the lofty trees had lots of leaves ,
And they were always juicy and green.
All of their nutrients, Gabby received.
No matter the weather,
Whether it be rainy or dry,
Gabby had all the leaves she could possibly eat;
More than enough to get by.

Gabby grew up big and strong,
Always having food to eat.
Once Gabby was older, wiser, and much bigger,
There was a giraffe named Gary she soon would meet.
Just like Gabby, Gary had a trait,
Which made him a bit bizarre.
Gary had a neck reaching high into the sky,
And they ate together, from trees near and far.

Many years passed, and Gabby and Gary had their own two calves,
With necks longer than any tree around.
Their small giraffe family was always happy,
For their was always plenty of leaves for them, they found.
After one long and hot summer,
The grass dried out, turning brown and crispy.
The short-necked giraffes had little to eat,
And other animals ate much of what was left (their grazing skills were pretty nifty).
