Our story begins with a man named Charles Darwin...maybe you've heard of him!
Of course they've heard of me! I'm only the most famous scientist in history.

2
Mr. Darwin discovered one of the most important scientific principles in history...evolution!

Umm...wrong type of evolution...try again.

3
Wait...you're telling me that Pokémon aren't examples of evolution?
What's a "Pokémon"?? Let me teach you what evolution is really about! To the forest we go!

4
Alright...we're here...now what? Can you tell us what you're talking about?

Evolution is my famous theory! It explains how we got all the species of life we have today. Natural selection explains why certain animals survive and reproduce at different rates!

5
Natural who?
You've had 150 years to learn this! Why don't I just show you an example of natural selection instead?
Hmm..I have an idea! I hope you like moths!

6
In this forest, there are 20 moths. 10 are white and 10 are brown. As you can see, the white moths can blend into the tree trunks better than the brown moths.

But unfortunately, this forest also has bats and birds that eat moths!

7
As you can see, the white moths blend into the tree trunks. The birds and bats can more easily find the brown moths to eat!

8
Soon, the brown moths dwindle in numbers! But the white moths continue to survive and have children. We call this an increase in "frequency".

This is starting to make sense...
9
After a while things change outside the forest. The villages near the forest start to build factories!

Hey, do you want to pollute everything in sight?
Why not?!!

10

Soon, the black soot flows to the forest, where it turns the light tree trunks dark!
Hmm...not our best idea...
11
So now, the forest looks more like this! With dark tree trunks! Now it's the white moths that stand out to the birds and bats.

The brown moths camouflage in the trees, and the predators don't see them. They live to reproduce!

12
Soon, the brown moths outnumber the white moths! We can say the soot on the tree trunks "selected" for darker moths. As in, it was more advantageous for survival to be brown, not white.

Ohhh...that's the "selection" in "natural selection"!
