It is a Tuesday Morning.
Elizabeth, on her way to the study, hears the telephone ring.
2
3
"Good morrow!" said Elizabeth cheerfully as she
answered the telephone.
4
5
"Good morrow to you!"
said an unfamiliar voice.
"Captain George Burtles
from the R.A.F. here."
6
7
"I hope you don't mind my calling, but we're in a bit of a pickle here and I was hoping
you may be able to help,"
said Captain Burtles.
8
9
"The Petroleum Institute recommended I contact you - I understand you've been developing a new type of fuel for jet aircraft," said Captain Burtles.
"Yes, indeed!" said Elizabeth.
10
11
"This is most excellent,"
began Captain Burtles.
"We have an unusual aircraft that necessitates a clean burning fuel. We've tried regular jet fuel, but
it simply doesn't cut the
mustard I'm afraid."
12
13
"You're in luck, Captain,"
said Elizabeth.
"I can begin straight away. I'll telephone you when I have some prepared for you."
14
15
"Jolly good!"
exclaimed Captain Burtles.
"I'll let you get on then.
Cheerio for now!"
16
17
"Cheerio Captain!"
said Elizabeth before hanging up.
"To the laboratory!"
18
19
Having set up all the laboratory equipment necessary, Elizabeth begins to mix a batch of fuel.
20
21
"Right," muttered Elizabeth,
"this canola oil will work best I think. Should smell good too!"
22
23
Elizabeth arranges a few
test tubes carefully.
24
25
"Jolly good,"
said Elizabeth after setting up another rack of test tubes.
"Almost in business!"
26
27
After finishing mixing nine test tubes of different chemicals, Elizabeth poured the final test tube's contents into a jar.
28
29
"What a lovely shade of pink!"
exclaimed Elizabeth.
"Captain Burtles will be
thrilled, I'm sure."
30
31
"I've made fresh tea, m'love!"
cried Charles.
"Ooh my!," exclaimed Elizabeth.
"Fresh tea! Be there in a mo'!"
32
33
"How are you getting on?"
enquired Charles.
"Jolly good!" said Elizabeth.
"I'm all done in fact. Captain Burtles will be thrilled."
34
35
"When we're done here we'll
head off to see the captain,"
said Elizabeth.
"I wonder what manner of aircraft the fuel will be used in?"
36
37
"Perhaps it'll be a new experimental type, maybe even something a bit hush-hush,"
suggested Charles.
38
39
"Now that would be a treat!"
exclaimed Elizabeth.
"You never know, you may be
on the money, Charlie.
The new jet type aircraft
are certainly amazing."
40
41
"I wonder if the captain would
let me fly something..."
pondered Charles.
42
43
"I'd say there's protocol to follow, Charlie," said Elizabeth.
"Besides which, the new jet aircraft would be vastly different to the biplanes you trained on."
"Hmm..." lamented Charles.
"I guess so. Shall we head off?"
44
45
Elizabeth telephoned ahead to let Captain Burtles know they were coming. Whilst Charles checked the water and oil in the Cord's engine, Elizabeth carefully
stowed the sample of fuel.
46
47
"Right,"said Charles.
"All set. Let's skedaddle."
48
49
"May I drive?"
asked Elizabeth.
"Certainly,"
replied Charles.

"Elizabeth Does A Little Chemistry"
Captain George Burtles of the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.), needing an improved fuel for a new type of jet aircraft, telephones Elizabeth to engage her help. Elizabeth, using her skills as an industrial chemist, obliges the captain's request. But what manner of aircraft would necessitate such a fuel? Speculation abounds, but Elizabeth presses on nonetheless. A most intriguing read, 1930s 1:12 scale.
