What is Down Syndrome?
It’s a condition where extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops, both mentally and physically.

2
Are there different types of DS?
Yes, “Trisomy 21” an error in cell division. “Mosaicism” an extra chromosome that makes 47, a normal person has only 46.Translocation,full or partial copy of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome.

3
How does a baby get Down Syndrome?
At conception a baby inherits 46 chromosomes from its parents: 23 from mom and 23 dad. A child with Down syndrome gets an extra chromosome for a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46. This extra genetic material causes the physical features and developmental delays.

4
Could I have been prevented it?
No one’s sure how to prevent it. DS can happen to anyone of any race. Older women have higher percentages of having a baby with DS. Sp since you’re 37 you had a higher chance, women 35 and older have a 1 in 350 chance of having a baby with DS.

5
Is it common have a child with DS?
It’s more common than we thought. Approximately 400,000 Americans have Down Syndrome and about 6,000 babies with Down syndrome are born in the United States each year.

6
Did my baby get it from someone in the family?
No, DS comes from the genetic conditions. Only 1% are hereditary cases.

7

All 3 types of DS are genetic conditions (relating to the genes), but only 1% of all cases of DS have a hereditary component (passed from parent to child through the genes). Heridity is not a factor in trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) and mosaicism.

8
How are mom’s diagnosed?
They get a Screening Test and a Diagnostic Test, the Diagnostic Test has a 100% accuracy rate. Prenatal screens estimate the chance of the fetus having Down syndrome.
