It was 1992 on a cloudy Friday afternoon in Georgia. The sun was shy and faded behind all of the dark, and thick clouds. The rain started to drip down drop by drop. I felt it dripping down my neck and fall off my arms. All of a sudden I heard mother say,
“Maya get inside now!”
I felt my heart start to race while I entered my house. Father was not home at the time to tell mother to stop yelling. He is very kind and never yells at me. I kneeled down in front of mother shaking while she screamed.“You think you can just go outside in the rain, and jump in the puddles before you do your homework. I am very disappointed in you, go to your room.”I got up and started for my backpack. From behind I felt her breathing down my neck and she stated very loudly in my ear,
“Now!”

I raced up the steps as fast as my little legs could, rushed into my room, and closed the door gently. It was five thirty-seven and I had none of my books to study with since I did not have time to get my backpack after mother screamed at me. I decided to reopen my door, and sneak down stairs to the library. My room was on the sixth and top floor of the house, and the library was on the fourth floor. I quickly and quietly rushed down two flights of steps, and slowly opened the door to the library. The door made a loud squeak. All of a sudden I heard mother stomping up the steps screaming for my name,
“Maya Emily Jones!”
repeatedly, the sound getting closer and louder.
I sprinted for my room and gently reclosed my door. Mother entered the room, her face red as a tomato and sweat falling from her forehead. She looked at me with rage in her eyes and came over to me. She said,

“Was that you making all that noise?”
“Yes, mother.”
I stated softly. She grabbed me by the shoulders, lifting me off my bed and started to pull me down the steps. I tried to resist her nails burrowing into my delicate shoulders, but she did not let go. A few steps later she finally she let go. Mother took a key out of her pocket. She opened a door which had a hallway leading down to another room. Mother grabbed my arm and started to pull me down the hall until we got to the room. She took out the same key and opened the door. All of a sudden I felt a hard push behind me, pushing me into the room making me lose balance, and fall. The door slammed behind me. Mother had trapped me into the room with no escape. A few minutes later which had felt as if it had been an hour, I decided to explore this little room. I stood up and shook all the dust off my body. I tried to see what was in the room but I couldn’t see anything.

I tried to look for a light switch, until I walked into what felt like a spider web but was really a small skinny chain. I pulled the long metal chain and the light flickered on. I saw a big room with boxes everywhere making the room feel smaller. I saw a box that said “To Maya” I looked around forgetting that I was alone. Then I opened the box.The big box only had a envelope. I opened the envelope and stared at it until I heard the door swing open and mother said,
“Get out!”
I quickly grabbed the envelope, and tucked it into my pocket. I ran out of the room and ran upstairs to my bedroom and closed the door. I hid the envelope under the loose floorboard behind my bed. Mother came in with tears dripping down her face. I just got a call from the hospital. Your father is dead. He had a heart attack around five o'clock. I started to cry, more then I have ever cried before. A fifteen year old girl should never go through this. The one person who I really loved was

gone forever. Mother left me alone in my room for a while. I got the envelope and opened it again. It was a gold, shiny, heart shaped locket. Next to it there was a post it note with the same picture from the locket stuck to it. The note stated,
Dear Maya,
Today is a sad day. It is the day that I pass and go to heaven. You are the one who can help your mother, and make her stop her cruelness. She does love you she just doesn’t show it. I want to tell you what you can have of mine. You can have the locket which is in the envelope. There is a picture of me and you in the locket. You can also have my love. I love you Maya,
Love Your Father

This news made me feel like I had been thrown into a brick wall leaving me broken and hurt. I felt like time had just stopped and left me all alone. Four days later I heard a big bang. I looked outside of my window and saw a big moving truck and a man. I saw mother go outside and greet him. I rushed downstairs. The man was moving his packages inside. Mother said
“Maya I would like you to meet Matthew. He will be living with us now.”
Mother pulled me aside and said
“Matthew and I are getting married tomorrow, but you can't come. You will be cleaning up around here.”
The news startled me. How could mother move on that quickly? I looked down at my old dirty clothes and knew that even if I wanted to go I couldn’t, because I have nothing to wear.

The next day came around quickly. Last night I ate my dinner upstairs, since mother was talking to Matthew about the wedding. This morning while I was walking downstairs I heard mother and Matthew talking about how the president's son George was attending the wedding to find his fairest lady. Matthew was telling mother that he had to daughters who lived with their mom. They are identical twins. One was named Eliza and the other was Britney. Matthew was talking about how he wanted his two daughters to attend and for one to marry George. He was trying to figure out who he would choose to marry George, but he decided to let George choose. I remembered that room mother had trapped me in and another box said “Old dresses”I tiptoed to the closet where mother kept her keys and took the secret room key. I then tiptoed silently to the door, and silently I unlocked the first door and closed it behind me. I ran down the hallway to where the second door was and opened that door with the same key, and turned on the

light. With the key I cut the tape off the box that said “Old dresses!” I found a baby pink colored dress that really stood out to me. I pulled it out of the box and saw a few holes in it, but that didn’t stop me from taking it anyways. I snuck the dress up to my room after I turned the light off and locked the doors. I put they key back in the closet. I hung the dress up in my closet behind all of my old dirty clothes. Mother called me downstairs. She said,
“The veil that I ordered is now at the shop, go pick it up.”
She handed me the money and I thought for a moment, what if I bring my dress to town and get it fixed up. I have been saving money so I can use it to pay for the fixing. I told mother that I would be right back, because I had to get something from my room. So I grabbed the dress and brought it down the back steps where mother couldn’t see me.
