In the South Pole, on a land named Antarctica, there lived an African Penguin family. The Winters were a family of three: the father, the mother and a penguin named Charlotte.

The Winters had just moved into Pengo, a small town in the Southeast of Antarctica. Mama and Dad penguin registered Charlotte for fifth grade at Pengeno Elementary. Charlotte was very excited to meet her new friends and play with them.

On the first day of school, Charlotte sat next to Sammi who was also an African Penguin. Charlotte and Sammi had a lot in common. Both were outgoing, loved to swim, eat fish, and play outside.

One day, Charlotte asked Sammi to go swimming after school. They swam for one hour. Charlotte asked Sammi, “Do you want to be my best friend?” Sammi replied, “Of course! I will be your best friend forever!”

5
Charlotte and Sammi continued to eat fish and swim together every day. Then, one day Sammi stopped showing up to their play dates. Charlotte became very sad. She did not understand why Sammi wouldn't show up.

6
It was another day at Pengeno, Sammi asked Charlotte a question, “Why do you seem sad?” Charlotte replied, “I’m sad because you haven't shown up to our play dates when you said you would.” “I’m sorry. My mom was making me clean my feathers.” Sammi replied.

The next day, at school, Sammi said,
"Hey Charlotte, I can't be your best friend anymore." Charlotte cried like a baby and finally asked, "why?" Sammi replied, "Because I have a new best friend. Her name is Layla. She is also an African Penguin."
