Using digital storytelling in your centers is a
great way for students to:
- practice writing skills like varied sentence
structure, figurative language, precise word
choice, dialogue, spelling, punctuation, and
more!
- share stories and information about themselves
with the class
- write and illustrate information about science,
social studies, and math, too!

Digital storytelling can be composed in
Microsoft Word or other word processors, but it
can also be done in many other programs.
Youngest students can use programs like
KidPix, SMART Notebook, or PowerPoint to help
them get started.
Older students will probably prefer the
creativity of Web 2.0 resources.

This Web 2.0 resource is called StoryJumper.
Teachers can create free accounts for their
students. Books can be made with text,
illustrations created from the art gallery, or by
importing original drawings or pictures.

Another free resource is StoryBird.com. It
includes diverse sets of professional artwork to
use as illustrations.

Students can even
collaborate to write with
another author (a student or
even their parent).

The kids love reading
and commenting on
each other's stories.
And spend extra time
writing and reading at
home!
