HELLO!
2
This is Carl.
Carl is a Carbon atom.
Atoms make up everything around us, from the air we breathe, our bodies, and even the stars!
3

Carl has a friend named Ollie. Ollie is an Oxygen molecule.
4

Ollie is a silly molecule. He hates to keep his feet on the ground, and loves to fly high up in the sky!
5

Carl the Carbon atom is a very busy dude. He travels all around the world to the craziest of places!
You wouldn't believe where Carl has been!
6

Carl spends some of his time up in the air, hanging out with Ollie and his fellow Carbon and Oxygen friends. He also mingles with other atoms, such as Nitrogen, which makes up 78% of the air!
Carbon makes up less than 1% of the air, but it is an important part of life on earth. Oxygen makes up roughly 21% of the air!
Can you spot Carl and Ollie?

7

How do atoms like Carl and Ollie get up in the air?
8

9

Carl leaves the air and travels into the leaves of plants through a process called photosynthesis.

10

The leaf's cells contain chloroplasts that assemble Carl and other atoms into sugar molecules called glucose with the help of Sally the sun. This sugar gives energy to the plant.
How sweet is that!

But why is Ollie here?
11
Photosynthesis also releases oxygen into the air. This is how Ollie gets up there!

12

But how does Carl get into the air?
13

People breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. This is known as respiration.
14

Like people and animals, plants release carbon molecules like Carl into the atmosphere when they respire, or "breathe."

Factories also release carbon into the air when they burn fossil fuels.
15

Animals then eat the plants, taking Carbon into their system in the form of sugar to use for energy.
16

People eat the plants, too!

17

When organisms die and decay, or release waste, they return carbon to the ground.
