Kimmy and Maggie are best friends. Every Thursday night they take swimming lessons at the local YMCA. They still aren't ready to go into the deep end yet but they still have lots of fun. Waiting outside for the girls was Kimmy's older brother Kip who was going to walk the girls home. They only lived a couple of blocks away.

Once they got home, Kimmy's brother went inside as the two girls stood outside and talked. "Did you see that cute boy in the pool today? He totally likes me?" Maggie prattled on. "What's that? A mouse?" Kimmy interrupted. "No, it's a baby squirrel. He's so cute." "Eww, don't pick it up Kimmy!" But she didn't listen and cradled the little squirrel in her palm.

"What are you going to do with him?" Maggie asked. "I'm going to sneak him upstairs and find a warm place for him to sleep tonight. After that, I don't know." "Okay. I guess I'll see you tomorrow." "Let's go upstairs little guy" Kimmy said as she hid the squirrel in her gym bag. She had almost made it to the top of the stairs when the family dog Biscuits started to growl. "Shhh! Easy boy."

Biscuits continued to growl at Kimmy's door as she set up a warm, little bed for the squirrel. Biscuits usually slept in her room but she didn't want to take any chances with her tiny guest. She knew that if she told her parents about the squirrel that they would make her put him outside. And she feared what would happen to him all by himself outdoors.

The next day Maggie came over and for a visit. "He is such a cutie. What's his name?" "It's Earl the Squirrel" Kimmy replied. The little guy started to squirm and ended up falling to the floor. Maggie forgot to close the bedroom door and Biscuits had snuck inside. "Oh no! We gotta find Earl!" The two girls frantically started looking for him.

Kimmy and Maggie laughed as Biscuits ran around with a baby squirrel on his head. "Okay boy, that's enough" Kimmy said as she removed Earl from her dog's head. Maggie noticed that Earl didn't seem to look well. "Hey Kimmy, Earl looks sick. I don't think he's feeling good." "I noticed that. What do we do?" Kimmy asked she started to panic.

"I can't tell my Mom and Dad. They don't even know about Earl. He'll get attacked or eaten by another animal if I leave him outdoors." "What about asking your brother Kip?" Maggie inquired. "He'd probably tattletale on me. I can't ask Kip." "Can't ask Kip what?" he asked as he walked by. "What's that?" He then softly picked up Earl and nuzzled against him.

Kip loved Biscuits but never really showed any interest in other animals. The girls were surprised by how gentle he was. "We have to make sure he's warm" he said snugly wrapping Earl in a towel. Kip took the squirrel over to the bathroom to check for any injuries. Thankfully Earl was fine. Maggie was in awe of Kip's tender ways. "Your brother is super-cute!" "Eww!" Kimmy replied.

"How do you know so much about squirrels Kip?" Maggie asked all goo goo-eyed. "Wikipedia" he responded. "Where did you find the squirrel?" "He was in our front yard. I found him there all alone so I put him in my bag and brought him home. Please don't tell Mom and Dad." "I won't. I'll help you sneak him out of the house. We have to bring him back to where he came from."
