My focus for this week was my thought of working in this hotel. I have already worked as a housekeeping supervisor in training for two weeks. Brentwood Bay Resort and Spa is a "Learning Organization". We held a general meeting on May 27th, and our manager mentioned the highest standards that all the staffs in the housekeeping department should achieve. I would like to share all I learn from the company with my classmates and teachers. I would also connect my academic knowledge with the practical skills into my work to improve my leadership.

The most significant thing I learned about working relationships this week was teamwork. In our Brentwood Bay Resort & Spa, there are totally 35 beautiful designed Ocean Suites and Ocean Villas. Every morning, our supervisor arranges two people as a work team to clean the entire floor that we are responsible for. The arrangement is random, so every day I would work with different people. For my point of view, I believe this system definitely would advance our team spirit, and improve our productivity. It is a better body system that our resort divides people into teams to finish our works.

The skill I developed most this week was to cooperate with my teammate. I heard from some of my classmates that they have to clean at least 15 rooms per day by themselves. I understand that people should be more hardworking in the large luxury hotel. However, cooperation is a more valuable lesson that I should learn in my internship. Once we go into the society, we cannot always walk alone. We have teammates, collages, supervisors and so on, so I need to let myself truly go into the working atmosphere. I have already worked for two weeks, and I gradually realize how to adjust my working pace with my teammate, even doing every step almost at the same time on making a bed.

In these two photos from my workplace, I was hosting a booth that publicizing our Brentwood Bay Resort & Spa this Saturday, on the Brentwood Day. At the left photo that I working with my housekeeping manager, Pablo, and the photo at the right side who with me was our marina manager, Nik. They are really nice to me. During that day, both of them patiently taught me what kind of special information I should introduce to the guest who visited our booth, and how to attract them to come to our resort. We shared free cookies and free bath salts to guests, and played mini-games with them, and offered coupons about Dining room, Spa, and Marina.

The communication skill that I used most this week was to talk with my collages in our resort. As I mentioned at the last page, I communicated with lots of guests who were interested in our resort's facilities on the Brentwood Bay Day. Today, our resort organized an outdoor activity about whale watching for staffs. This was a great chance for me to have the deeper communication with my collages during we going our to visit the ocean. This was my first time to meet so many staffs at the same time from different departments. Each of them was easygoing and had a great sense of belongings of our resort. I was enjoying to talking with them and visiting the beautiful ocean view in Victoria.

My focus for next week is my productivity. It is common for room attendant to work about 6 hours per day. Within those 6 hours, I need to keep working at least 3 hours in the morning. After a 30-minutes lunch break, I would continue to work until the end of my work time. We usually have 12 rooms to clean by two people and each room should be cleaned in 30 minutes. However, sometimes we would meet some rooms are really dirty and messy, so we need more time to sweep. Therefore, I should have better time management to arrange my work, including obligating time in case of urgent situation. This is what I am going to focus for next week.

Every week I learn more about our guests/customers; this week I learned more about how to advance our service on the housekeeping. We have two Ocean Villas Condos, and we would clean those condos every day unless the guest doesn't need to. There was a time that we were going to clean the condo, but the guests were at there. They didn't mind us to clean the room when they were there, so we decided to make everything in a low voice. They also had children at home, so we immediately preferred to picking up the small rubbish and mod the floor, rather than vacuuming with higher noise. For every room in our resort, we also offer equipment for pets and children, as well as food for the pet. The goal for our resort is to establish the greatest place for every guest and hope them enjoy their holiday.

Something I want to improve is my enthusiasm for truly engaging the morning meeting of our department. As my manager and supervisor mentioned that I am always willing to listen to them on the meeting, but I seldom share my own opinion to my team. I know that I do have something in my mind, but I didn't catch the chance to point out during the short meeting. Sometimes our manager switches the topic so quickly, and I don't want to disturb his conversation before he finishes talking. Properly that is why I cannot catch the time to share my thought. Also, I would like to collect my thoughts as a little list on my phone. Once we hold the meeting on the morning, I can share my opinion or talk about the problem that I find first, so that I am truly able to attend the meeting rather than just listening.

Something I am concerned about is my bad habit of cleaning stay over rooms. I am an organized person, and sometimes I will think annoying to see a messy place. When I clean a stay over room, I can not help organizing all the staffs, including the guest’s belongings if they are out of place. I know that it is not good even it is sensitive to touch the belongings of a guest. Some of the guests would put their staffs everywhere, like putting clothes and little things at random on the table even on the floor.

Thus, I usually make them looks more organized after I clean the room. However, my supervisor told me that we don't need to touch anything from the guest. Even the things from our resort are not organized at the stay over a room, we should just leave them there because that is what the guest want. I hope I would get rid of this “bad habit” that is too organized as soon as possible. I know what is my responsibility of being a room attendant, and I need to make sure what should I do and what I shouldn't.

My focus for this week was time management during work. Our department developed a new schedule guidelines for all housekeeping staffs to arrange the work. Also, an evaluation form would be given to every staff at the end of the month, which includes evaluating productivity, quality of work, teamwork, punctuality, reliability,and occupancy levels. My manager mentioned at the morning meeting that everyone should be cooperative, and always help each other. Our supervisor will monitor us of our productivity, whether we finish our job earlier, on time, or delay. If someone finishes his/her work earlier and be responsible for extra work, he/she would have an additionally positive comment. In short, I kept positive and efficient during these two weeks of my work. I usually arrive 10 minutes earlier to do some morning preparation, such as packing new cookies, helping the laundry person to fold the towels and so on. I also showed my great time management in front of my supervisor.
