What is cosmology?
There are many different theories on how our world came to be. Today we will take you through the scientific theory of the big bang, the Hindu creation story and the Indigenous Australian’s creation story.
Let’s begin…
Cosmology is the study of the origin, evolution and nature of the universe.
3
The Big Bang
4
Our story starts at the very beginning of time, nearly 14 billion years ago. In the beginning, everything in the universe all the energy, all the stuff, even space itself, was compressed into a point, smaller than an atom.
5

Scientists called this small point a singularity. They refer to this time as the BIG BANG… this is when the singularity started to expand and our universe was created.

6
Time started.
7
The universe was very hot, but as space expended it cooled. As the universe cooled atoms formed. It all became dark as there were no stars yet.

8
Everything in the universe is made of atoms. There is just over 100 different types of atoms, these are called elements. Atoms are all different, depending on the number of protons they contain.
9
Atoms can stick together to form other things, when they stick together we call this a molecule.
For example when two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen stick together, they will make a molecule of water.

This is what a water molecule looks like
10
Even with all the energy of the big bang, there were not any atoms with more than 4 protons, in the early universe. As the space expanded, there were clumps of hydrogen atoms that gravity pulled together.

11
Gravity is the force that holds us to the earth. It makes things fall. The more stuff there is the more that gravity holds it together. When there was enough hydrogen, gravity was so strong that it squeezed the atoms together, so tight that the two hydrogen atoms made a new helium atom.
12
When this happened, it gave off light, this is what made stars. Big balls of hydrogen that gravity squeezed together. It took around 300 million years, from the beginning of the universe for the first stars to light up.
13
As stars get older, there is no more hydrogen. Gravity starts to squeeze the helium to form heavier elements, and then again gravity squeezes these elements to make even heavier elements. Eventually there were no more new elements that gravity could make.
14
If the star is the right size they can blow up in what scientists call a supernova, this explosion creates even heavier elements. Sometimes when a new star is forming, it will attract the dust of old stars that have already gone supernova.
15
This ring of dust formed planets around us, we call the star and the planets around it, a solar system.

16
Our planet earth formed from the dust of the older stars at about the same time our sun formed, 4 and a half billion years ago.
17
The young earth was hot with lots of volcanos, astroids which are rock and comets which are mostly ice, fell on the earth. After a while the earth cooled and large oceans were formed.
18
The air was very different than today. The large oceans with the heat and molecules from under water volcanos allowed complex molecules to merge, eventually a large molecule formed and could copy itself.
19
The molecule had a shape like a twisted zipper, it could split in half the same way you would unzip a zipper. Each half could fill in the other half, making it able to spilt again.
20
These copies were not always perfect copies, sometimes there were slight differences. If the new version were better at creating copies, then the new version would end up having more copies. When molecules work together they can be even better at creating copies.

21
These groups of large molecules working together are called cells. A cell can divide into two and make new cells.
It is because the new cells weren't always perfect copies that new different capabilities emerged.
22
One big change was when a cell emerged that could turn the energy of sunlight into chemical energy. After many generations and many changes, the ability to turn sunlight into chemical energy became part of the first plants.
23
Cells had a big effect on the earth. They changed the air to the type of air we breathe today. This helped create a protective layer that help to filter out a harmful type of sunlight.

24
After cells had changed the air into the type of air we have today, it became possible for life forms with more than one cell to emerge.
But no matter how big the animal, or how many cells it has, it always starts as a single cell and that cell grows and divides.

25
Before we begin our story,
Some things you might like to know...
26
Trimutri - The Hindu Trinity
Cycle of Creation

27
There is one God who creates,
Hinduism believes in a triniti of creation Gods
one god who preservers ,
and one God who destroys.
28
Brahma
The creator. Hindus believe that anything and everything was created by Brahma.
As we are here to find out the origin of the universe, we will meet him again soon.
29
Lord Vishnu - The Preserver
The protector of the universe, it is said that when vishnu sleeps...
30
Lord Shiva - The Destroy
That Lord Shiva destroys the universe.
31
The Origin of the Universe....
Hinduism believes that there is a cycle of creation and no single story.
Most religions have one creation story.
32
They believe that there have been many creations of the universe. The universe we live in is one of innumerable universes.
33
In the cycle of the universe, the length of a universe in immeasurable.
When Lord Brahma has lived the universe to its end it is completely destroyed by Lord Shiva.
34
This is the end of the universe, but from this the creation cycle and the origin of the universe begins again...
35
The story we are about to read is what Hindus believe is the origin of our universe origin.
36
But there are many others in the Hindu religion...
37
In the beginning, before time and space there was nothing...
No universe, no planets, no earth, just a vast emptiness...

38
A great ocean ebbed and flowed throughout the nothingness. The waves were rough and then they were calm.
Dark...
Rolling endlessly through time that was not time. They reached everything and nothing.
Just ocean and infinite nothingness...

39
A large snake floated atop the waves of the ocean. He was coiled and still as to keep something safe.

40
Inside in the tunnel of the snake, sleeping was
Lord Vishnu.
He slept and slept, floating through the vast ocean.

Anata kept Vishnu safe as the waves rolled them through the emptiness.

41
All of a sudden there was a sound.
‘Auuuummm.’
Gradually the sound strengthened, The sound became very powerful and full of energy.

42
It filled the great emptiness, everything and nothing, until the emptiness was gone, and there was energy.

43
Lord Vishnu heard the sound and he woke from his deep and peaceful sleep.
He felt the energy and could see that the nothingness had gone away.

44
Then something began to happen....
A beautiful lotus flower sprouted from Lord Vishnu’s navel. It grew and grew, it was large and magnificent.
Image source: (The Wonder Project, 2011)
45
The most beautiful lotus flower imaginable.

46
There, sitting in the the beautiful lotus flower was Lord Brahma. He looked over and saw Lord Vishnu in the coils of the snake. Vishnu then spoke to Brahma. He told him to make a world, to make something beautiful.

47
Lord Brahma began by settling the great and endless ocean. The waves became still and the wind became calm. He brought the powerful ocean to a stand still
He did all of this perched in the petals of the magnificent lotus flower.

48

Brahma then began to pluck petals from the flower. He split it up so that there were three different parts.
He threw one petal high above him.
Image source: (The Wonder Project, 2011)
49
It soared gracefully until it transformed into the heavens.
Image source: (The Wonder Project, 2011)
50
Brahma then floated in the lotus flower into the heavens and he threw another petal.
Image source: (The Wonder Project, 2011)
51
The petal transformed into the earth but it was completely bare
Image source: (The Wonder Project, 2011)
52
Brahma then took one more petal. He used the last petal to create the skies above the earth.
Image source: (The Wonder Project, 2011)
53
Brahma looked down on what he had created. He saw that it was bare.
So he created everything there was to create on the earth. He grew plants and trees and mountains and oceans.
