Before America was it's own country, it belonged to Britain as a colony. They were very successful. However, their ruler often gave them unfair taxes and didn't always respect their needs. This made the colonists angry.

In order to show the king that they disagreed with the taxes, some colonists dumped tons of tea into the Boston harbor. This became known as the Boston Tea Party. The kind was furious with the colonist's actions and decided to close the harbor and raise taxes even higher to repay the tea.

The king passed many laws and taxes in order to keep the colonists in line and continue to collect money from them. These included the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and Intolerable Acts.

The colonists then discussed their complaints in a meeting of the First Continental Congress. Still, the king chose to ignore them.
