is for Africa
When diamonds were found in Africa, countries jumped on the opportunity to imperialize. European nations then took over African countries. They destroyed culture, divided tribes and nations, and spread diseases.

is for Berlin Conference
The Berlin Conference was held in order to prevent European nations from going to war while competing for African Imperialism. It was decided that any nation could claim land by notifying other nations to show they now control that land. However, they gave no thought to the African nations that already existed.

is for China

As the Qing dynasty fell, people began to starve and leadership was very poor. During this time, other countries pressured China to open their ports and trade with them. When they finally did open their ports, Britian fought to have the upper hand in the exchange. This led to much conflict and gave Britian more power over China.

is for division

During the age of imperialism, many nations were divided. This was due to more powerful countries claiming random areas of land, without consideration of the people and groups living in those areas. This lead to tribes and nations being divided on several continents, including Africa.

is for economic improvements

In a more positive light, imperialism often improved the economy of a nation. With industrial advances and availability of jobs and trade, economies began to flourish with their new leaders.

is for Filipino-American war

The United States annexed multiple countries, including the Philippines. The Filipino people were upset that they were taken over by the United States. They wanted independence. In 1899, they rebelled against the United States by beginning the Filipino-American War. The rebellion was not successful.

is for gains

Another reason for imperializing was the economic and cultural gains the most powerful country received. Nations were able to collect money, supplies, and even cultural ideas.

is for Hawaii

Hawaii was one of the countries that were imperialized by the United States. They were attracted to the land and it's natural resources so they overthrew the queen and annexed it for the United States.

is for independence

During the age of imperialism, being an independent country was very rare. Countries strove for independence, as it meant they had more power.

is for Japan

When the US forced Japan to trade with them, people worried Japan would become powerless. They decided to study the way Europeans lived. After doing this, they became the dominant power in Asia and began taking over countries for themselves.

is for knowledge

One of the things countries received on either side of imperialism was knowledge. Different countries and cultures all have different ideas. As countries imperialized, some of these ideas and information spread.

is for land

One of the major reasons to imperialize was land. Land provided countries with new natural resources, higher populations, and more income from trade. This made countries want to gain more land and imperialize.

is for Manifest Destiny

This was the belief that America had the "God-given right" to take land for themselves. This belief led to America annexing and purchasing much land. This included them buying the land west of them in the Louisiana Purchase.

is for nationalism

Nationalism became a big part of Imperialism, as it affected how people reacted to their new leaders. Many people felt that they should stay loyal to their culture and not accept the culture brought in by those who took over.

is for Open Door Policy

The open door policy was one of the ways the United States was able to take control of China. They forced China to trade with them and made them powerless.

is for Ports

Ports were a big part in imperialism because it allowed countries to move goods over seas and trade. Ports were often used in order to imperialize a country. The open door policy and treaty of Kangawa both resulted in the opening of ports.
