On Saturday, when Effy went to get the mail, she found
a letter addressed to her. It was an invitation to her
friend Alexis's slumber party!

Effy was so excited. Tonight would be her first slumber
party ever! She spent all day packing, and finally it was
time to walk to Alexis's house and meet her friends.

At first, the girls were having a great time. They ate pizza, roasted
marshmallows, and played board games. Effy also met Alexis's new
friend, Samantha who was really nice.

Before long, it was time for bed. Alexis's dad came in to
turn off the lights, saying: "Goodnight girls!"

Suddenly, it was pitch black. Effy was used to sleeping with a night light and
was immediately very home sick. She missed the glow in her room every night.
She was very afraid of the dark.

Effy turned to wake Alexis, she needed to tell her friend how afraid she was.
“Alexis, I’m scared. It’s so dark!”
“Don’t be such a baby!” Alexis snapped. Effy got up and ran crying into the
bathroom.

All of a sudden, Effy heard a knock on the bathroom door.
“Who is it?” She whimpered.
“Hey, it’s Samantha, are you alright?”
Effy opened the door to let her in. She explained that
she was scared and that Alexis had laughed at her.

“That wasn’t very nice of Alexis,” Samantha admitted. “You know, I
used to be scared of the dark too.”
“Really?!” Said Effy. “But you were not afraid at all tonight!”
“You’re right, I got over it. My grandma bought me a teddy bear to keep
by my pillow. It keeps a look out during the night, making sure I’m safe.”
“All my teddy bears are at home! How can I go back out there?”
“Here, you can use my teddy for the night,” offered Samantha.

“Wow! Thank you so much.” Effy said gratefully. The two of them
walked out of the bathroom together. They crawled back into their
sleeping bags, Effy with Samantha's teddy bear standing guard.
