To the children, so they can learn about eating healthy.

Once upon a time there was a girl named Sally. She really liked to eat junk food. Sally's favorite kind of food was candy.

Sally also liked to eat pizza and cake. She never ate her fruits and vegetables. This was because she thought they looked funny and not as good as pizza.

Her mother always tried to tell Sally to eat healthier food, but she never listened.
Sally you should eat this apple
No mom, I don’t want to; it looks funny.

Mrs. Carlson

As Sally entered her classroom on Monday she saw someone new. They were standing in front of the class where her teacher normally stood. It was a woman, with the name Mrs. Carlson on the board behind her.

Sally sat down in her seat as the bell rang. Mrs. Carlson started to talk to the class.
Good morning class, my name’s Mrs. Carlson, and I am here to talk to you about eating healthy.

When Sally heard this, she became frustrated.

I don’t want to learn
about healthy eating.
My mom tells me all
about already.

Mrs. Carlson
Even though she was frustrated, Sally listened to Mrs. Carlson. The other students did too.
I am going to be here for the next week to help make sure that you all know how to eat healthy.

Mrs. Carlson
The first thing we will learn about is food groups. The food we eat is made up of 5 different groups. These groups are grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy, and proteins. Fats are another group, but they are unhealthy.

Sally was very confused. She had heard of fruits, milk, and vegetables before, but what were the other groups? She decided to ask Mrs. Carlson.

Mrs Carlson? My name is
Sally, and I have a question.
Yes Sally?
Mrs. Carlson, what are grains, proteins, and fats?

Mrs. Carlson
The grains group has foods like bread, crackers, and pasta. These are foods that are made with grains. Proteins are found in foods like meat and beans, so like kidney beans or hamburgers.

Mrs. Carlson
The fats group is a group set apart from the others. It isn’t one of the 5 main food groups. What makes it different is that it has unhealthy food with added fats and sugars. Foods in this group are candy, cake, and sweets.

Mrs. Carlson
MyPyramid is a tool that helps you choose healthful foods for your meals and snacks. This, along with My Plate, shows us how much food we should eat from each food group. The better we eat the stronger and more healthy we will become.

Mrs. Carlson put the charts up on the board.
