Hi! I'm Sam the Sandwich! And i'll show you my journey through the body and digestive system.

I'm going to be John's lunch! I will start out by entering his digestive system in the mouth.

I start out in the mouth,

where the salivary glands will soften me and let the teeth break me up easily.

The tongue will then push me down the esophagus. To do this, the uvula will block the passage to the nose to prevent food going into the nasal cavity.

The epiglottis will block the windpipe, so no food/drink will get into where air enters. The esophagus runs behind the windpipe, and prevents food from going into it.

Peristalsis is an important function towards the beginning of the digestive system. This is when the muscles in the esophagus contract in a wave like motion to push down food.

After that, I will enter the stomach muscle. The stomach will squeeze and squeeze and physically break me up even more. The stomach will release acids and enzymes to break down the food.

The stomach then turns me into chyme. Chyme is a liquid/mixture of fluid that passes through the stomach and small intestine. It is made of gastric acid and food that is somewhat digested
