Marie and Chen have become great friends and love spending time together at school. Marie has given Chen an invitation to attend her birthday party this weekend and has invited Chen to sleep over.

Later when the girls are outside for recess, Chen tells Marie, "I am nervous, I have never been to a sleep over before." Marie tells Chen, "Sleepovers are so much fun. We will have pizza, snacks, cake, and ice cream with all of our friends from school and then after they all leave we will play until bedtime." Chen tells Marie, "I will speak to my parents and let you know if I can come."

After school, Chen rushed home to show her mother the invitation that Marie had given her for her party. Chen was surprised when her mother agreed to let her attend the sleepover. Chen asked her mother, "Will you go to the sleepover with me?" Her mother replied, "No you will go to Marie's party and I will pick you up the next day."

Chen went to her bedroom to think about Marie's sleepover. She wanted very badly to attend the party but, was still very nervous about spending the night away from her parents. Chen had slept with her mother since she was born and didn't know if she would be able to sleep over with out her.

The next morning when Marie saw Chen walking up to the school, she ran to greet her. Marie said, "What did your parents say? Can you come to the sleep over on Saturday?" Marie replied, "My mother said it would okay for me to come to your sleepover." Marie noticed that Chen was not excited and asked if something was wrong. Chen explained to Marie that she was nervous about going to the party without her mother.

Marie asked Chen, "Is there something special that you could bring along with you that would make you feel better? I have a special teddy bear that I use when my mother cant sleep in my room with me." Chen was surprised to hear that her friend Marie also had a hard time sleeping without her mother.
