Once upon a time, in 1968, Richard Nixon was elected as president of the United states.

Nixon was a law and order kind of president and targeted the people protesting the Vietnam War. Richard also formed the New Federalism which gave more power to federal, state, and local governments.
And as a result of Nixon's new foreign policy, with the help of his national security advisor Henry Kissinger, the US worked to improve relations with the Soviet Union and China.
In 1972, Richard Nixon was well on his way to winning the election for his second term, but he wanted to win big.
So Nixon hired the Committee for the re-election of the president to spy on the democrats to learn their campaign tactics.
CREEP went out and spied on several Democratic offices, including the Watergate complex.

But as they were trying to fix the wiretapping in the phones in the watergate complex so the committee could listen in on the democrats conversations, they were caught by the police.
