To Shevin because she told us to dedicate the book to her

There once was a pencil who was born to a family of pens

He was always sad because he did not fit in with his family.

He tried to play with the crayons, but...

They said he wasn't waxy enough.

You aren't waxy enough!

Then, he tried to play with the markers, but...

They made fun of his eraser.

Hahahaha you don't have a cap you just have an eraser!

He tried to play with the colored pencils, but...

They said he wasn't colorful enough.

You're not colorful enough!
He tried to hang out with the scissors, but...

They said he wasn't sharp enough.

You're not sharp enough!
He tried to play with the glue, but...

The glue tried to glue him to the trashcan.

No don't do it!

He tried to hang with the mechanical pencil gang, but...

The mechanical pencils made fun of his dull tip.

Your tip is too dull! You can't hang with us!
He finally gave up on trying to fit in.

And one day, he found a place where he could be himself.

I'm going to go into this pencil case to be alone.

Because of his new home, he becomes...

I love my new home!
