This book is dedicated to my students, past, present and future.

Lily lived in a big building in a big city.

Lily walked everywhere. There were many people in the city but she was usually alone.

Lily liked to walk in the park. This was her favorite place in the city. She always saw an old woman with her gray dog.

Good morning. How are you feeling today?
I'm well. How are you, Lily?

I am happy to see you, Ms. McIntyre. And of course you too, Fifedog!
We are happy to see you too. Have a nice day.

Thank you, Ms. McIntyre.
Everyday Lily saw Ms. McIntyre and asked her how she was. Everyday she said hello to Fifedog and gave him a treat.

Every night Lily dreamed of living in a place with lots of trees and farms. She wanted to live in a place with few people but a lot of animals.

Ms. McIntyre was an old woman. She lived alone with Fifedog. She did not have any family. Her friends had all died or moved away. She liked talking to Lily in the park each day.

Ms. McIntyre knew Lily was alone too. She did not have many friends but she was always nice to her and Fifedog.
She wanted to do something nice for Lily.
