Lymphogranuloma Venereum (bacterial)
What is the cause of this STD? It is a bacterial disease spread by sexual contact.
What kind of symptoms might a person experience? Rectal bleeding, constipation, pain in lower back or abdomen, and pain during urination.
How long will it take after you after you have come in contact with the disease before the symptoms might appear? 3-30 days.
What can happen if left untreated? Most often, it does not cause other health problems. However, if let untreated, it may increase your risk for STD's like herpes, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV.
What kind of problems can develop for the fetus if the mother has the disease during pregnancy? You may have a preterm birth or a low-birth baby, and uterine infection after pregnancy.
Lymphogranualoma Venereum (bacterial)
What are some ways you can prevent this disease from occurring? Help keep your vaginal bacteria balanced, do not douche, and practice safe sex.

Bacterial Vaginosis (bacterial)
What is Bacterial Vaginosis and how is it caused? Bacterial Vaginosis is the overgrowth of bacteria present in the vagina. It is caused by sexual contact but it is not considered an STI.
What kind of symptoms may this person experience? Vaginal itching, vaginal odor, and abnormal vaginal discharge.
How long will it take after you after you have come in contact with the disease before the symptoms might appear? It may appear soon after sex with a new partner.
What can happen if left untreated? It may leave you at risk for STD's.
What kind of problems can develop for the fetus if the mother has the disease during pregnancy? You may have a preterm birth or a low-birth baby, and uterine infection after pregnancy.
Bacterial Vaginosis (bacterial)
What are some ways you can prevent this disease from occurring? Practice safe sex, and do not use scented products on your vagina.
Pelvic Inflammatory (bacterial)
What is Pelvic Inflammatory and how is it caused? Pelvic Inflammatory is inflammation of the female genital tract. It is caused by bacteria. Most of the time, it is caused by bacteria from chlamydia and gonorrhea.
What kind of symptoms may this person experience? Pain in the pelvis area, pain during sexual intercourse, nausea, and vomiting.
How long will it take after you after you have come in contact with the disease before the symptoms might appear? Almost immediately to a couple days.
What can happen if left untreated? Chronic infection and infertility can develop.
What kind of problems can develop for the fetus if the mother has the disease during pregnancy? The pregnant patient and her fetus may be spared general anesthesia and the attendant risks of abdominal surgery.
Pelvic Inflammatory (bacterial)
What are some ways you can prevent this disease from occurring? Practice safe sex, don't douche, and get tested.
Chlamydia (bacterial)
What is chlamydia and how is it caused? Chlamydia is an STI that can be passed on through vaginal, anal and oral sex. It can be caused by not having safe sex.
What kind of symptoms may this person experience? Many people who have chlamydia don't experience any symptoms, but spotting may occur or pain in the pelvis or abdomen.
How long will it take after you after you have come in contact with the disease before the symptoms might appear? Most people do not experience symptoms but it could be up to a month or more.
What can happen if left untreated? It is unlikely to cause any long-term problems but the more times you have chlamydia the more likely you are to get complications.
Chlamydia (bacterial)
What kind of problems can develop for the fetus if the mother has the disease during pregnancy? The risks are miscarriage, passing the infection onto your baby, or premature birth.
What are some ways you can prevent this disease from occurring? Practice safe sex.
Gonorrhea (bacterial)
What is gonorrhea and how is it caused? A sexually transmitted bacterial infection, it is caused by having unprotected sex with someone who has the infection.
What kind of symptoms may this person experience? Painful urination, abnormal discharge, or pain in lower abdomen.
How long will it take after you after you have come in contact with the disease before the symptoms might appear? Symptoms usually appear 2-7 days but up to 30.
What can happen if left untreated? Infertility and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.
What kind of problems can develop for the fetus if the mother has the disease during pregnancy? Increased risk of miscarriage and premature birth, babies born while the mother is infected can get eye infections and may become blind.
Gonorrhea (bacterial)
What are some ways you can prevent this disease from occurring? Have protected sex.
Trichinosis (bacterial)
What is Trichinosis and how is it caused? A sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. It is caused by sexual contact with someone with the disease.
What kind of symptoms may this person experience? Pain in the abdomen or during sexual intercourse, genital itching, and foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
How long will it take after you after you have come in contact with the disease before the symptoms might appear? Most women do not experience symptoms but if they do it appears 5 to 28 days after exposure.
What can happen if left untreated? It can raise your risk of getting HIV.
What kind of problems can develop for the fetus if the mother has the disease during pregnancy? Preterm birth, low-birth weight of the baby, and you can pass the infection to the baby.
