I can understand your worry with Mason's disability, but I assure you that as your child's Dr., I am here every step of the way. There are many things you can do as a parent to help your child get through this and have a typical and normal childhood. Although he may not be able to do something the same way as other kids, with modifications and accommodations, he can be successful.
This is Mason. Mason does not feel like he is like other children. He can't play sports like his peers. He usually just sits off to the side and watches.

How was school today hunni? Oh mom, I don't want to go back. I can't do anything my friends do. I just sit and watch them as they have fun. Did you talk to your teacher? I am sure Miss Jessica will be glad to help make you feel comfortable. I will go into school with you tomorrow and we will talk to her together.
Hello, Miss Jessica. Thank you for meeting with Mason and I on such short notice. Mason has something he would like to talk to you about. Go ahead Mason, it's okay. I am here to help. I'm feeling sad because my friends are always having fun outside, but I can't do the things they do. I can certainly understand your sadness Mason. I am sorry you feel this way. Is there any way you can modify recess time or the rules of games so Mason can be involved, Miss Jessica? Absolutely Mrs. Edwards. I will schedule a bit more free choice indoors and group time so Mason has the opportunity to develop a bond with his peers on a personal level. I will also modify the outdoor game rules so Mason can be included in games while in his wheelchair. Thank you so much, Miss Jessica. Sometimes a parent has to be their child's voice.

This is amazing, Miss Jessica. I love how you modified the game. Look at that smile on Mason's face and Mason's new friend just told him he was "cool." None has ever said that to him before. You aren't the only parent that has come to me expressing their concern for their child. Have you ever thought about going to parent support group? I can give you some information and groups that I am aware of. Sometimes the key is getting educated and support.

Welcome to the support group that helps parents cope with their child's diverse disability. It can be very overwhelming for a parent to hear that their child cannot do things that other children do. That is a myth. Children can certainly do what others are doing, they just learn to do it in a different way. All of us here are your support to help educate you so you can educate others on your child's needs.

I don't know about this mom. What if Aiden doesn't like me? What if he doesn't share his toys with me? You need to make more friends buddy. Aiden is going to enjoy playing with you. You both like playing with trucks.

I must say, you are doing a wonderful job at this mommy thing, Mrs. Edwards. Mason is such a smart and loving boy. Thank you Mrs. Cownburn for allowing us to come over. I'm trying to support Mason and his disability by showing him that just because he's different, doesn't mean he can't do what others are doing. We just enjoy spending time with people who don;t look at him differently. He may look different on the outside, but inside, he's just like any other 4-year-old.

I like that story mommy. You make my heart happy when you do fun stuff with me like taking me to Aiden's house to play and reading to me. You're welcome, buddy. How about we go to the new park tomorrow? Oh yeah, mommy! That will be fun!
