One sunny morning, in Fogwater Basin, Grumpy Bear was making his morning rounds to all the trash cans in the neighborhood when he found the jackpot! Someone had hosted a big party and threw away perfectly delicious cake and burgers. "What a breakfast!" he thought, and he scarfed up the goodies in a jiffy. With a full tummy, Grumpy Bear headed off toward the Coast Guard Station to visit his friend Dave, bringing along a piece of cake to share.
"Hello Dave!" Grumpy Bear greeted, "You'll never guess what I have in my backpack for you!" "Is it cake?" asked Dave. Grumpy Bear replied, "How did you know?" "Well, I can smell your cake breath from here," said Dave, "Hand it over, thanks!"
By the Coast Guard station, Dave and Grumpy Bear watched the waves come crashing onto the rocks. They decided they wanted to take an epic adventure on this special Saturday. "Let's go talk to Mr. Finny! He might have some adventure ideas for us!"

Mr. Finny had been the head librarian at the Fogwater Historic Library for 30 years. He didn't go on many adventures himself, but he had read about every real-life adventure from the peninsula's history, making him an expert on the topic. When Dave asked him for adventure ideas, Mr. Finny replied, "I've heard of a forest nearby called The Neverending Forest. Here is a map to find it and two sack lunches. I bet you will have such a nice adventure-nature walk." "I can carry those lunches with 2 of my 8 arms," said Dave. And with that, they set off to find The Neverending forest.
Sure enough, Dave and Grumpy Bear found The Neverending Forest. It was a short one mile walk. As they entered the forest, they met two magical brother creatures. Python the water dragon was a great swimmer and he could spit water cannons. The land dragon, Sygon, had invisibility powers and could spit lava cannons. Python and Sygon were super friendly and agreed to join Grumpy Bear and Dave on their adventure. The two dragons told a marvelous story about how The Nevereding Forest came to be truly never-ending.

"Let us begin at the beginning," Sygon said. "Long ago, there were great giants who planted 50 tree seeds along the Washington coast every Labor Day as a tradition. One year in 1872, the giants got carried away with their festivities by agreeing to let Old Wizard Jenkins pour some expanding powder on the seed packets. That year, though the giants planted only 50 seeds, each morning 50 more would sprout. And it continues to this day. Now you see how it became The Neverending Forest."
"So how do you get out of this Neverending Forest, then?" asked Grumpy bear. "You have to know where the magic portal is in order to exit. Otherwise, you're stuck in here forever," replied Python. "So do you know where that magic portal is?" asked Dave. "We do," said Sygon, "but our brother Reddon has the key. He lives at the top of a waterfall and he's a little bit sneezey, so watch out. Let us go to him during his lunch hour." A little baffled, Grumpy Bear and Dave followed their two dragon friends to the waterfall.
