Magic.
A trick performed by a magician, or something incredible that happens with the only explanation being magic!
Can you think of any tricks we read about?
I'll give you a clue, one included a small white animal!

Magic tricks can be performed in the street, with your friends, on a stage in front of an audience and even on television.
Some people learn magic tricks on the internet. In some places, you can enrol into a magic school! Not quite like Hogwarts, but a class where a professional magician will teach you how to perform some impressive tricks.
You might have seen or heard of some very special tricks that aren't so straightforward.
I'm talking about the magic tricks that will make you speechless!
You will watch in amazement... how did they do it?! Is magic real? How is it possible to do that?
These are the type of magic tricks that are perfected by the very best professional magicians!
What is this man in the picture doing?
How could he possibly be doing that?
These types of tricks are called illusions! An illusion is making the audience believe that something unreal is happening. It is playing tricks on their mind, to make them believe that magic is really happening!

A mind-blowing magic trick often performed by highly skilled magicians is called levitation.
Levitation is when an object or a person floats or rises up into the air! Have you ever seen a trick like this being performed?
Can you think of how you can do this trick?

On the internet, there are lots of websites dedicated to magicians and their magic tricks. The floating card trick was explained by one person.
To make this trick happen, you can use;
A playing card, a drinking draw, some tape, scissors and some black thread.
Let's find out how it's done!

Using the scissors, you cut a short length of straw. The straw needs to be shorter than the width of the playing card.
Then, you tape the short piece of straw to the playing card, as you can see in the picture.

You’ll need less than half a metre of thread.
If you want to levitate the playing card a longer distance, you’ll need more thread.
Thread the black thread through the straw and then tie a loop at the end of the black thread on the left side of straw.
Tape the other end, the right end that comes out from the opposite side of the straw, to the playing card.
With the straw at the centre, you’ll have two loops: one for each thumb of your two hands!

Performance time!
Loop the left loop around your left thumb and loop the right loop around your right thumb. The picture shows us how to do this...
You then slide the playing card until it’s against the left-loop (your left thumb).
Then, start to let go of the playing card with your left hand and tighten the thread between your two thumbs by slowly pulling your hands apart. You’ll be able to release the card and it won’t fall!

I believe we are ready to perform the levitation floating card trick!
What's the magic word? Can you think of one? You can even create your very own word to use with your magic tricks!
Make sure you remember it!
