Bobby Bear loves helping the planet.   One day, while 

he and his mom were gathering the recycling he asked, 

"Mom, are there any other ways we can help the 

planet?".   "Saving energy is another great way to help 

the planet and it saves money, too! If you tag along 

with me today,   I will show you how," his mom said.

"Today I need to go to the 

store to buy a new 

refrigerator. You can help 

me decide which one to 

get," said Bobby's mom.  

"Lets go!" Bobby shouted 

and ran for the door.   "Wait 

Bobby!" called his mom.  

"If we turn off the lights 

before we leave, we will 

save energy.   Also, we will 

save 2 cents while we're 

gone."

"Okay Bobby, we could buy the refrigerator on the 

right, which is just like our old one, or we could buy 

the one on the left.   It is Energy Star qualified," said 

Bobby's mom.   "What does that mean?" asked Bobby.  

"That means it uses less energy," answered his mom.  

"We should pick the one on the left then, Mom.   Using 

less energy helps the planet, and I like to help the 

planet," said Bobby.   "Good choice! Not only are we 

helping the planet, but this refrigerator will save us 24 

cents a day!" said his mom.

"Why did you get light bulbs Mom?" asked Bobby.  

"Because these aren't regular light bulbs, Bobby.  

These are fluorescent light bulbs.   They use less energy 

and each one saves us 7 cents a day." answered his 

mom.

Bobby's mom also hid a surprise for 

Bobby in her cart.

When Bobby and his mom returned home it was a little 

chilly in the house.   Bobby wanted to turn the thermostat 

up.   "No Bobby, instead of turning the thermostat up 3 

degrees, we can save energy by opening the curtains to 

let the sun in.   It will warm the house and save us 33 

cents a day."

"While doing the laundry there are some ways we can 

save energy too," said Bobby's mom.   "If we wash our 

clothes in cold water we will save energy and 16 cents 

per day.   Also, by using a drying rack   or clothesline 

instead of a dryer, we save a lot of energy and 36 cents 

a day."

"When the dishes are all washed, if we turn the dish washer off 

and let our dishes air dry instead of using the automatic dry cycle 

we will save energy and 2 cents per day," said Bobby's mom.  

"Wow! We can save energy and money while doing our chores?" 

Bobby asked.   "There are many ways we can save energy during 

our daily activities.   Why don't you go play for now? I'll show you 

more ways to save later," said Bobby's mom.

Bobby played his favorite video game until his mom 

said it was time to get ready for bed.   "Did you turn 

your game off?" asked Bobby's mom.   "No, I forgot," 

replied Bobby.   "If you turn your video games off, 

you will save energy.   You will also save 13 cents       

per day," said his mom.   "I'll turn it off when               

I'm done from now on.   I promise,"                                             

said Bobby.
