One day, Grandma was working in the kitchen when Paige came running in.
Grandma! Can I help you make the chocolate chip cookies?
Of course! I've already preheated the oven for 375 degrees F.

The first step is to cream together the butter, sugar, and eggs using an electric mixer. The butter is an animal-based fat that adds tenderness, flavor, and moisture. We measure it by using the markings on the wrapper. The granulated sugar is an all-purpose sugar used in all baking that adds sweetness and creates friction with the butter, which absorbs air into the mixture. We measure it by using a dry measuring cup, scooping it in, and leveling it off. Lastly, the eggs add moisture, structure, and texture while also acting as an emulsifier (holding the ingredients together). Eggs are normally measured by number and just need to be cracked and put in a bowl.

The next step is to blend in the vanilla extract. After the previous ingredients are creamed, we can pour the vanilla extract into the electric mixer and blend it in. The vanilla extract has a liquid consistency and adds flavor to the cookies. We measure this by using a measuring spoon, pouring the vanilla extract into it, and eyeing it until it gets to the top.

Then, it is time to mix the flour, baking soda, and salt together in a separate mixing bowl with a wooden spoon or whisk. The all-purpose flour has a high protein content, provides structure, and is used as a thickening agent. We measure it by using a dry measuring cup, lightly piling it in, and leveling it off. Luckily, this recipe does not call for sifting the flour, which is something you might have to do in other recipes before you measure. The baking soda is a chemical leavening agent, which releases carbon dioxide that makes the dough rise. We measure this by using a measuring spoon, scooping it in, and leveling it off. Lastly, the salt is a flavor ingredient that enhance the flavor of the cookie. We measure this by using a measuring spoon, scooping it in, and leveling it off.

Now, we stir the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture with a wooden spoon.

Lastly, stir in the chocolate chips. We measure this using a dry measure cup, scooping it, and leveling it off. This adds flavor to the cookie in order to make them chocolate chip cookies!

After that, we separate the dough into multiple balls and place them on a cookie sheet. Now, we are going to put it in the oven for 12-15 minutes. We'll set the timer for 12, so that they don't burn.

After the timer goes off, we will check to make sure they are golden brown. If they are, then we will put them on a cooling rack until they are ready to eat! Thanks for cooking with me!
