Amelia Earhart was born July 24th, 1897 in Atchinson, Kansas. Her parents were named Amelia and Slaton. She also grew up with one sister who was named Grace.

When Amelia was 23, she went to her first airshow in California. She was able to take a small ride in an airplane for the first time. This was when she fell in love with flying, and knew she had to become a pilot.

Six months after the airshow in California, she began flying lessons. She bought her first plane and named it "The Canary".

In 1922, Earhart set the record for highest altitude flown for any female Pilot in the world- she reached 14,000 feet!

In 1928, Earhart was called and asked if she wanted to be the first female to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She gladly accepted, yet never actually flew, and was only named the co-pilot of Charles Lindbergh. This is when she got her nickname "Lady Lindy".

After the famous "Lindy flight", Earhart worked closely with publisher, George Putnam, who wanted to write Earhart's story. They later married in 1931. The pair created a secret plan for Earhart to become to first woman to fly across the Atlantic- solo this time.
