HISTORY
The discovery of some necropolises in Porticone and Difesa Grande testify to the human presence in the area since the VI century B.C. But according to experts, its 'real' first inhabitants would have been the Frentani, the same that during the Roman Empire were the origin of nearby towns on the Adriatic coast, such as Vasto. It is known with certainty, however, that it was these people who built Buca, a city now submerged by the sea a few meters north of Termoli, whose remains sometimes peek at the bottom. A hypothesis wants that the place was founded by populations fleeing from the looting of the Goths, arrived here from the nearby area of Campomarino, around 412 after Christ. Termoli has been part of the Benevento Duchy: we have passed the sixth century: given its strategic position, the city is equipped with walls, a tower and eight crenellated towers..
Subsequently, with the Franks, it passes to the Duchy of Spoleto, under whose it remains even after being taken by the Normans and then becomes a possession of the Swabians, who expand the walls and castle. A series of vicissitudes followed: it was stripped by the Crusaders in 1194, partly destroyed by the Venetians fighting with Federico II and then by the 1456 earthquake, donated in 1495 by Ferdinand II of Aragon to Andrea di Capua, again sacked in 1566 by Turks led by Pialj Pasha. Quiet times until 1799, in the meantime Termoli declared itself to be a republican: a group of Albanians from the neighboring municipalities of Portocannone and Campomarino of Bourbon faith besieged and conquered. In 1847 King Ferdinand of Bourbon allowed to extend the town outside the walls and the modern city was born. In 1864 its railway station was inaugurated.

THE CATHEDRAL
The old town has been well restored. It is a genuine walled community jutting out into the sea. Many of the houses have been re-built and painted in a range of pastel colours. In a central square there is the Cathedral (12th-13th century), dedicated to St. Mary of the Purification a noteworthy example of Apulian Romanesque architecture which houses the relics of the two city’s Saints, Basso of Lucera (San Basso) and Timothy. The upper part of the facede was destroyed by an earthquake in 1456, and also sufferd from Turkish sack of the city in 1566. The Baroque additions were eliminated in the restoration of 1930-69, returning the edifice to its original appearence. Part of pre-existing Basilica, built in the 11th century (over the original, smaller cathedral called Ecclesia Sanctae Mater) but soon destroyed, has been found under the edifice.

Our Saints...
Saint Basso and St. Thimoty
We celebrate the feast of San Basso on 3/4 August. The saint after a vigil at the Port is conducted in a procession on the sea with boats. In the evening there are great celebrations with concerts and fireworks on the sea.
On may the 11th we celebrate St. Thimoty

Some relics of the saint are kept in the crypt of the Cathedral.

THE SWABIAN CASTLE
The Castle is the most pre-eminent structure in Termoli, erected by Count Robert I of Loritello during the domination (11th century) it was renovated during the duke of Federic II (1240), after the damage created by an attack of the Venetian fleet. The Castle (called Castello Svevo) was part of a wider fortification system, incuding a wall surrounding the entire city, of which only a tower can still be seen.

TERMOLI NOWADAYS
Perhaps Termoli's name derives from Terma or Termine, understood as a border area. But some say that its origin is due to Ter molitus, from the Latin tres moles, fortresses or towers. Then here in Termoli there is Rejecelle, the alley, between the alleys of the old village: a little more than 30 centimeters wide, contends with the alley of Ripatransone, in the province of Ascoli Piceno, the record of narrowest street in Italy.
A maritime village that carries in its ancient streets the history of those coastal populations for centuries subjected to destruction not only by the pirates arrived from the sea, because of the strategic position and the beauties of the territory.

Precisely elements that now make Termoli a sought-after destination for a tourism that is not only seaside but also for food and wine and nature, for a stay full of different points of view. And then there is its port that manages to be an important development point for the whole territory, for fishing and commercial activities, but also for those strictly tourist with the great flow of passengers for the Tremiti Islands, which from here they reach faster than any other port and Croatia
Thanks to its large sandy beach, crystal clear bathing waters and excellent quality of accomodations and services, consistently awarded the European Blue Flag, Termoli has developed tourism , further attracting visitors with its picturesque seafront promenade where to see fine examples of the traditional "trabucchi" fishing vessels.
Termoli continues to be a port and a fishing town. A distinguishing feature of the old town are the Trabucchi, wooden structures for fishing without the use of boats

Trabucchi

The only major port of Molise, Termoli is also the largest and most important seaside resort of the region. Over the years, Termoli has begun to thrive and its increasing population led to the creation of the newer portion of Termoli closer to the Adriatic. The busy fishing port is an excellent spot to sample some of the fresh seafood of Molise. Needles to say,

THE DREAM
In the town of Termoli intersect the parallel 42 º North and 15 º East meridian, the latter is the central meridian time zone (UTC-1 or Central European Time) in Berlin, Paris and Rome (Central Western Europe) which in fact determines the same time zone (call it the time of Termoli). The meridian is called Termoli-Etna and this makes the city an Adriatic "Greenwich" Italian.

Mysterious apparitions, submerged sounds and surreal visions: strange things are told in Termoli. On the mouths of the people there are legends that refer to enigmatic events, things that some say they can testify even if they have no historical or scientific foundation. Stories of ordinary 'popular credulity' that tell however another face of the city and above all catapult the memory in other times, those in which these beliefs were born and spread and then handed down to the present day
Myths and legends
A cambäne de Santa Catarine (The bell of Santa Caterina). No one can prove it, but dozens of sailors are ready to guarantee the existence of a miraculous bell sunk in the sea of the city. Some fishermen, in fact, say they have been warned about the imminence of dangerous storms from mysterious tolls from the water. An old tradition, also reported by the historian Termolese Carlo Cappella, refers to the bell of Santa Caterina that fell into the water in 1566, during a raid of the Saracens led by Pialj Pasha. Once upon a time it was on a homonymous rock, but as it was loaded onto a caique by the sultan's men who wanted to take it away, the waves of the sea made it fall and sank into the water and settled on the seabed. Perhaps it was not a pure coincidence, if it is said that even today the subdued sound of that 'drowned bell',
caused by the waves that would make the clapper move, would indicate the strength of the sea with the intensity of its tolling, advising the fishermen to leave on stormy days. In short, it means that the bell of Santa Caterina - for the truth never found during the underwater excursions - did not want to abandon the people of Termolesi, but remained in the sea of the city to defend its people,
