
In 1914, a man named Archduke Ferdinand was driving around Sarajevo. Just then, a group of Serbian people came and tried to kill Ferdinand and his wife. Then, another Serbian man came and killed Ferdinand. Austria-Hungary was outraged.





On July 28, the Great War had begun. Germany and Ottoman Empire supported Austria-Hungary. France, Russia, Britain and its allies(Canada, India, Australia, New Zealand etc..) all declared war. In the Pacific, Japan joined the Allies.

































On July 22, 1915, Germany made gas attacks at Ypres. The soldiers were overwhelmed by the gas. Some of the soldiers peed on their handkerchiefs and used them as gas masks instead! Some weren't lucky. They died because of fluid in their lungs.

































On July 1916, the Battle of the Somme started. Thousands of British and German soldiers were killed. The battle was very bloody. In one day, 60,000 Allied soldiers were killed. The result ended in a tie. The battle ended in November and was for nothing.
