Seventeen
- I am a 17-year-old girl
- I wonder if people who look at me think I’m not
- I hear people say I should act like an adult
- I see people treat me like a child
- I want people to understand I’m not fully grown yet, but
- I am not a little kid
- I pretend I’m ready to grow up
- I feel like I’m older than I am
- I worry I’m not ready to become an adult
- I cry because adults don’t understand me anymore
- I am not an adult yet
- I understand I will be soon

- I say I’m ready to take adult responsibilities
- I dream of my near future at college
- I try to live up to expectations
- I hope I become successful as an adult
- I am scared
I wrote this poem about me. I wrote it because it is time for me to start growing up and I'm currently at a weird stage in life. Adults treat me like a child but expect me to act like an adult. I'm seventeen, and I mentioned that in my poem because it is my last year before I am legally an adult. Poetic devices include repetition in the word "people" and "adult" and alliteration to growing up in the words "adult," "grown," and "grow up."

Myself
Amanda
Caring, thoughtful, determined, passionate
Sister of Theresa
Lover of her family, music, and her room
Who feels upset about homework, happy when napping, and excited at concerts
Who needs her family, music, and something fun to do
Who gives really good Christmas presents, her attention to family and friends, and too much money to musicians
Who fears spiders, whales, and drowning
Who would like to see Ireland, Louis Tomlinson, and her bed right now
Resident of Santee
Dombrow

I wrote this poem because it is who I am. I was honest. I wrote certain things over other things I could've chosen because it means more to me. I mentioned my sister because she is my best friend. I mentioned those three fears out of other fears that I have because those are my top three fears. To understand this poem the reader must know about me. Poetic devices include repetition in the word "family" and "music" and alliteration to music with the words "music," "musician," "concerts," and "Louis Tomlinson."

Happy Birthday
- His face bright
- A smile from his wife
- Light in his daughters' eyes
- All at a counter
- Surrounding red velvet cake
- Candles were blown
- Candies were eaten
- Joyful singing on a cold, March night
- All had put on a jacket and made things warm
- ¨Another year older¨ he lifted a chocolate
- The bright against the gray
- Happy Birthday
Highlighted words are from Gary Soto's poem ¨Oranges¨

I wrote this because I was assigned this assignment on my dad's birthday and I wanted to write my first poem about his special day. I mentioned things that he enjoys like red velvet cake. I also mentioned me, my sister, and my mom because we all mean a lot to him. To understand this poem more the reader must know my dad. For example, the cake is red velvet because that is his favorite type of cake. Poetic devices include rhyme in "gray" and "birthday" and vowel assonance in "bright" and "wife" and alliteration for "birthday" in the words "cake," "candles," and "happy birthday" and assonance in the words "candles" and "candies."
Into Shards
- At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning
- A puppy had went to sleep
- At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning
- His small snores had stopped
- At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning
- He inhaled, knowing it was his last breath
- At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning
- His body lays alone as he fades to a white
- At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning
- His once pounding heart no longer beats
- At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning
- Many hearts break into shards
- At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning
- Tears stream down pale faces
- At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning
- Two children become confused and worried
- At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning
- A survivor is soon to be taken to a hospital
- At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning
He is gone

I wrote this poem about my friend who had passed away. To understand this poem, the reader must know the person in this poem is ending his life intentionally. The reader, too, needs to know that he had a great life and it was unexpected, so I mentioned "two children" which are his brothers who suspected nothing like that to happen. The reader also needs to know the "survivor" taken to the hospital is someone who was going to do it with him. Poetic devices include alliteration to passing away in the words "last," "body," "white," "beats," "pale," "hospital," and "gone" and repetition in "At 1:37 on a Tuesday morning."

More than Content
Happiness: [hap-ee-nis], noun, the quality or state of being happy; good fortune; pleasure; joy: When I get home after a long day of school and take a nap; When I finally finish all of my homework; Eating comfort food when things are bad; When my mom gives me hugs when I am sad; When I get an A on my Chemistry test or quiz; My dog when he eats steak; My sister when she eats chocolate ice cream; My dad when a football team he is rooting for wins; Going to bed; Watching Mulan on Saturday mornings; Watching Hercules when I'm sick; Eating at IHOP with Theresa and Kimmi; Listening to really good music; When the lights go out at the beginning of a concert and everybody screams; Reading a suspenseful book; When my sister meets Snow White at Disneyland; When I hang out with my friends at my house; When one of my favorite musicians releases new music on iTunes.
I wrote a definition poem about the word "happiness" because I was a low point in life when I wrote this and I needed something to keep me positive so I wrote about things that make me, and people I care about, happy. I mentioned only people that make me happy. I mentioned only movies that make me happy. Everything I mentioned in this poem is held special to me, which is why only people who know me very well will understand the depth of this poem. Poetic devices include rhyming with the words "bad" and "sad" and repetition in the words "my," "eats," and "watching."
