Long, long ago in ancient Greece, some people 

began telling stories about life.   Over time, the 

stories or myths grew big and with lots of 

imagination.   These myths were about gods 

and goddesses. People believed the myths or 

stories were true.   They respect the gods who 

they believed helped and guided them, and 

built temples to honor them.     

According to the stories or myths, the 

gods and goddesses looked and acted 

human.   They married each other.  

They laughed, loved, argued, and 

fought with each other.   But they were 

immortal, which means they never 

died.   They lived forever because of a 

special fluid called ichor.   It is not 

blood and it flowed through their 

veins.

Zeus is the most powerful of the 

gods.   He has a terrible temper 

and could throw thunderbolts 

very far.   Hera is the wife of Zeus, 

the Queen.   She is the goddess 

of marriage, children, and the 

home.   Hera is very very jealous.

Poseidon is the the lord of 

the sea and is the brother of 

Zeus.    Hades is another 

brother of Zeus and is the 

lord of the underworld.
