The Jade Emperor, ruler of Heaven, had ten unmanageable sons.

One day, they transformed themselves into ten suns, heartlessly scorching the earth from high up in the heavens.

Unable to stop their mischief, the Jade Emperor summoned Houyi, an archer who was immortal to teach his sons a lesson.

Houyi came down to Earth and saw its suffering. Everything was lifeless and the people were in agony. Plucking an arrow from his quiver, he took aim at the suns. The first one fell down dead, then another.

In the end, nine of the Jade Emperor’s sons were dead. Houyi chose to leave one sun alive, to give the earth light and warmth.

Hearing the news The emperor was enraged. He expelled Houyi and his beautiful wife from heaven forever and took away their immortality and forced them to live on Earth as other mortals.
Houyi and Chang'e were very unhappy living on Earth. His only wish was to go back to heaven with his beloved wife and live as immortals once again, to avoid the inevitable death that awaited all mortals on Earth.

Houyi recalled that the immortal Queen Mother of the West, who lived on Earth, had a rare supply of the elixir of immortality. He left on a challenging journey to seek her aid.
