This is Jack. Last weekend Jack’s grandma celebrated her 100th birthday! Now Jack wants to know how he can live to 100. Do you have any ideas?
Jack asked his mom how he can live to 100. Jack’s mom said “I know that it’s important to go to the doctors, have good nutrition, exercise, and also take care of your mental health. Why don’t we ask some professionals?”

Jack and his mom scheduled his yearly check-up with his pediatrician. When they arrived at the pediatrician’s office the nurse was very nice and asked if Jack or his mom had any questions. Jack’s mom nudged him and he said “Well actually, I do have a couple of questions.”
Nurse Cara led them to their room as Jack asked "So my mom told me it’s important to go to the doctor once a year, but why is that if I’m feeling healthy?” Jack asked. “That’s a great question, Jack!” replied Nurse Cara.

“Coming to see us once a year lets us make sure you’re growing at a good rate, we can figure out if you have any health issues like allergies that you may not notice, and we can give you shots to keep you from getting sick. It’s also important because we check in to make sure you’re doing things like sleeping enough and wearing a helmet when you ride your bike” said Nurse Cara.

Do you know how many hours of sleep you should be getting? Jack is 6, so how many hours of sleep should he get every night?

When Jack and his mom were leaving the office, the pediatrician reminded Jack, “Don’t forget we’re not the only doctors you need to see.” But Jack didn’t know what other doctor he needed to see. Jack’s pediatrician gave him a hint: brushing his teeth. Jack asked the pediatrician, “So I need to see a dentist regularly too?”
“Absolutely” said the pediatrician, “you should see your dentist twice a year so they can make sure your teeth and mouth stay healthy! They will also make sure you’re brushing your teeth twice a day AND flossing!”

Jack felt like now he knew about going to the doctor but wasn’t sure who to talk to to learn about exercise, nutrition, and mental health. Jack’s mom told him he should ask his P.E. coach the next day about exercise!

When Jack got to P.E. the next day he asked Coach Louise, “Why will exercise help me live to 100?” Coach Louie was very excited to get this question and told Jack that he needs different kinds of exercise to stay healthy and that an hour a day of activity is a good rule to follow to be healthy.

Coach Louise went on to tell Jack, “To keep your body healthy you need to keep it moving which is called aerobics and build your muscles too! You can do this with activities like soccer, football, jump rope, bike riding, and tag."

"It’s also important to make your muscles stronger by doing things like push-ups or gymnastics! Always talk with an adult like me or your parents to make sure you are being safe while exercising. If you follow these steps you will have a heart healthy enough to live to 100" explained Coach Louise.

“Don’t forget that besides getting your one hour of exercise a day, you also need to eat right” said Coach Louise. When Jack asked her more she encouraged him to ask the school cook, Mr. Harrington, while he was at lunch.

When Jack got to the cafeteria he saw Mr. Harrington and asked him if they could talk about nutrition when he was free. Mr. Harrington was very happy that Jack was taking an interest in healthy eating, so he went to talk to Jack while he was eating lunch and even brought him a copy of MyPlate.

Mr. Harrington explained “In order to have nutritious eating habits, you need a balance of the five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy.”
