Dedicated to the inspiring children of GEAR school

Geeta Phogat was born in a small, sleepy village in Haryana, Delhi. The village had old rules such as women should get married early, women should not study much and so on.
Geeta's father, Mahaveer Singh Phogat was an award- winning wrestler. While everyone in the village was more interested in teaching their girl child to learn how to cook, Mahaveer had other plans in mind.
Mahaveer decided that he would train his daughters to become wrestlers.
Every morning, while everyone else was sleeping, Geeta and Babita would wake up at 3.30 and run to their training ground.
The training ground was nothing but a square mud pit built by their father, Mahaveer.
Everyone taunted Geeta and Babita and their father. Unlike other girls in their village, they both wore shorts and teeshirts and also had their hair cut short so that it did not disturb them while fighting.
They did not pay heed to anyone's comments and continued with their training. Later, their 4 other sisters also joined them in the training pit.
Remember this is a very small village. There were no proper training facilities like the ones we see in big cities.
Still, Geeta and her sisters persevered in their simple training pit. Summer, winter or monsoon, they would wake up and start their tough training regime.
