Scary Mary

Mary wasn't scary, but people called her

"Scary Mary" because she found

everything scary:

the colour of the strawberry,

the sound of the lorry,

and even the wings of a fairy.

Poor Scary Mary!

When she went out the street,

she would always hid behind an orange tree.

For in spring she was afraid of the birds' tweets,

and in winter she was afraid of snow and sleet.

She was also afraid of taking sweets

from those people who were indiscreet.

Poor Scary Mary!

When the night was dark and she had to go to bed,

all the shadows of her toys became monsters in her head...

For she had a fevered imagination, but she used it in the wrong way:

She dreamed about scary castles far far away, where there were no happy princesses

and the knights weren't brave

And when she woke up with the morning sun rays,

her dolls still look like ogresses

and her eyes were filled with dismay.

"Poor poor Mary!" Her teacher used to say, "the world around you won't be scary, if you look it in a different way!"

And from that moment on, she wasn't scared any more:

the colour of strawberries became the colour of love.

the sound of the lorry reminded her of a song

and the wings of a fairy helped her to fly over the globe!
