I have not had any experience with Assistive
Technology in the classroom yet. However,
there is a student in fourth grade that has
trouble hearing. He wears hearing aides and
the teacher wears a special device around her
neck that amplifies her voice directly to his
hearing aides. Other than that, I am pretty
new to this new form of technology.

Assistive Technology Type
Alternative keyboards:
Communication

What: Overlay/Concept keyboards - flat paper
or plastic overlays on top of keyboards with
sensitive areas for key input functions.
Disabilities: Visual impairments, Language
/Speech, Learning Disorders, etc.
Classroom Benefits: overlay can have larger,
more simple key areas for typing. Pictures can
be converted into text for writing.

Screen Readers:
Communication

enter text here
What: Screen Readers - software that can interpret what the
screen says and put it into audible words or braille of a
representation of the text, pictures, charts, etc.
Disabilities: blind, visually impaired, or learning disabled.
Benefits for Classroom: students that can not see would be
able to hear or feel the material being discussed and thus
participate with the rest of the class. The program would sum
up the page and not recite each and every word. It focuses on
titles, subheadings, picture captions, etc. so not to waste time.
