Comm. Log

Cole: Please remember to read the Comm Log before your shift
Thanks, Arizona
Cole came rushing into the office. He was 15 minutes late, and the only case worker on this evening. Not watching where he was going, Cole slammed into the whiteboard Arizona left for him to read. knocking it over, face side down.
Cole was in a rush to start his evening duties, so he grabbed his water bottle and headed up the stairs to the common area.
He had a map of the layout of the house, and started to familiarize himself with his new workplace.

Comm Log
Oh Geez Ill Pick that back up later, First and foremost I have to check out this layout!

This is where the lack of verbal communication can have negative affects on them as a whole.
Arizona communicated non-verbally through the communication Log - This is an example of bad temporal communication. "The different time perspectives also account for more intercultural misunderstanding "De Vito Et Al., 2016, pp. 139).
This misunderstanding/ non-verbal barriers can have detrimental affects on jobs in this type of work because it can end up really affecting other peoples lives, like you will read about with josh.

*hears footsteps in the hallway upstairs** Do I hear footsteps upstairs?

Tonight was the night it would of been really beneficial for Cole to read the entries on the youth staying at the halfway house in the communication log. Arizona left a message regarding a certain youth who has night terrors.
Because Cole missed a really important part of his shift, (the Switch between days and night staff) he also missed on the information regarding the special conditions for the kids who have reached certain time goals (3 months, 6 months, 1 year) without incidents or issues.

HEY! You shouldn't be out here! You should be in bed! Do you know what time it is?
** YAWNS and rubs eyes**
Whuh... Huh?
Who are you?

**Turns away from Josh avoiding eye contact**
You are supposed to be asleep! You need to get back to your room right away sir.
My Name is Josh, Have you spoken to Arizona? I am in the file! I have been since the start of the month.
Point Of View: Cole
(Subjective to Josh, Nervous around him)
--> High anxiety, New job jitters, New people/ Enviroment.
--> Half way house; Most of the Adolescents have been perceived as violent. First Shift/ Left alone.
--> Nervous, remained at a "social relationship distance" [1.2 meters - 3.6 meters apart] (DeVito Et Al., 2016, pp. 130) from josh.
--> Finds adolescent out of bedroom, does not know proper protocol for the night shift.
--> Cole Stresses out; Starts to communicate incorrectly; "you" messages, avoiding eye contact, Interupting, and extreme use of solution messages are used to interact with Josh
Cole uses non-verbal techniques:
repetition: "You shouldn't be here" "Go back to bed",
control: using hand movements and other emblems to show you want to speak, and using his body movements like eye avoidance (DeVito Et Al., 2016, pp. 120-121);
These are Used to accent his verbal messages.
Cole jumps to conclusions when dealing with josh, assuming he escaped his room;He put him back inside his bedroom and locked the door. Cole was not listening to the verbal messages Josh was using to explain his situation; but instead used "Offensive Listening - Looking for faults in what they are saying so you can use it against them"(DeVito Et Al., 2016, pp. 82-84).

I'm allowed out at night, I get.. **Cole interrupts him abruptly**
(using a perfect example of impolite messages)
Cole moves towards josh, and grabs a key out of his pocket.
Go back into your room until morning; We will discuss it then. You cannot just escape your rooms. I am going to lock it until morning.

This is 'The negative' scene that is portrayed by my two characters Cole and Josh.
Cole does not participate in 'active listening' (DeVito Et Al., 2016, pp. 101-102).
Instead he uses a different communication pattern called "disconfirmation"(DeVito Et Al., 2016, pp. 106).
This is the pattern of not acknowledging josh's overall presence or messages;but instead judging josh on the situation around him, cole being subjectively biased to his position of power.
The
'Positive Communication'
Scene
