After Prometheus stole fire from Zeus, the king of the gods was very angry. Out of his fit of rage, Zeus asked Hepaestus to make a woman modeled after Aphrodite. Pandora was to be the first woman.

Many of the gods gave this new woman a gift. Aphrodite gave her beauty, Hermes gave her boldness, Demeter taught her how to garden, Athena taught her how to spin cloth into clothing, Apollo taught her to play music and sing, Poseiden gave her a pearl necklace, Hera gave her the gift of curiosity, but Zeus made her foolish.

Pandora was sent down to earth to become the bride of Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother. As a wedding gift, Zeus gave Pandora a box, but warned her not to open.
