Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, is where Marvana is from. She lives in a section called Dharavi.

Marvana, like others, lives in a slum--a place where poor people live--a place where the water is never clean--a place where there is never-ending war for resources.

Marvana wanted to go to school, to get her education, but Marvana stayed home to provide for her brothers and sisters since her mother left long ago.

“Kavi, stop playing around and help Abhay, and me get water,” Marvana hissed as she grabbed the handle of the heavy Jerrycan. She held her brother's small hand. Marvana was the eldest so she led the way.

Marvana and her brothers walked barefooted, stepped on scattered pieces of metal and dead animals, along the rocky path to the large water hole.

Marvana hoped that no one would be at the water hole. But she was wrong. Although, it rained, overnight, the water hole was almost dry. Which means they have to resort the old dirty swimming pool.

Marvana and her eldest brother Abhay gave each other the same look. She slowly turned around disappointed as she and their brothers made their way to the swimming pool. Its water was murky, almost like tar. But it was all they had, who were they to complain.

“Marvana, why is it that color?” Kavi questions as he played with the container in his hands. Marvana shrugged as she began filling up the Jerry Can.

Once they arrived at their small, rustic shed. Kavi collapsed on the floor curling his small body in the fetal position, holding his frail hands against his stomach.
