Climate change. How do we as people cause climate change to happen? Well, as people we do things without knowing how it can affect the environment, animals, and ecosystems. I decided to focus on just one ecosystem today and that is the ocean. Right now lets talk about how we as people are causing climate change. I’d like to introduce to you something called greenhouse effect, the greenhouse effect is what is causing climate change, which then affects the ocean and ocean life itself.
We burn fossil fuels and those fossil fuels contain carbon, and when this carbon is burned it combines with the oxygen in the atmosphere, which then creates carbon dioxide. Deforestation results in the emission of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere that was recently stored in the earth’s surface in the form of trees and other plants, or locked up soil. As you may know, Deforsation is caused by human activity.

We release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in huge quantities because we burn so much fossil fuels and changes in land use that we have applied are so global. This is the reason why carbon dioxide is the most important man-made component of the greenhouse effect.

Now, what does this have to do with the ocean and ocean life? Well, even with the wide capacity to absorb heat and carbon dioxide, oceans we're 0.17 degrees Celsius (0.3 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer in 2017 than in 2000, and the warm trend seems to be accelerating. More than 90 percent of Earth’s warming since 1950 occurred in oceans, so it’s easy to see why scientists are concerned about this.

lets talk about some reasons that show how the ocean is being affected exactly: Coral bleaching: coral reef expert Tom Gores pointed out that mass coral bleaching events observed during the 1980s were probably due to odd warm temperatures related to climate change. Temperature: The oceans temperature has risen throughout the years.

Drowning wetlands: Rising sea levels, partly the result of heat absorbed by the ocean, is also “drowning wetland”. Such areas normally grow fast enough to keep up with higher water levels. But recently, the rise has accelerated to the point where wetlands can no longer keep up above the water.

Let’s talk about how climate change has affected some of the ocean life, the animals we will be focusing on are sea turtles, whales, and squid. Starting with Sea turtles: The effects of climate change are likely to have a sad impact on sea turtles, because of rising in sea level, it impacts the sea turtles nesting beaches. Whales: The bowhead, narwhal, and beluga, which live in Arctic waters, are impacted by climate change. Climate change impacts the oceans where whales live, also including their migration.

Squid: With squid, they actually benefit from climate change, here’s how: their bodies are able to process food easier when the water is warmer. As a result, the squid will grow to be larger. Climate change can also result in squid becoming a food source for other animals. Both sea turtles and whales are endangered, the whales aren't as endangered and still exist to this day.
