    One day a first grader 

named Sally asked 

meteorologist Clare McTighe 

what global warming was. 

"Well, Sally, I'll tell you!" said 

Clare.

         "Global warming is when the 

temperature of the Earth gradually 

gets warmer," Clare explained. "Many 

people also call it climate change. 

There are various theories about the 

causes of global warming, but many 

scientists believe it is caused by 

something called the green house 

effect,". 

     "What's the green house effect?" asked 

Billy, one of Sally's classmates.

     "The greenhouse effect is a warming of 

Earth's surface and its atmosphere. It's 

caused by gases in the air that trap heat 

energy coming from the sun, and these are 

called greenhouse gases. The most common 

greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon 

dioxide, and methane. It's like we live in a 

green house!" Clare explained. 

     Clare went on. "These gases in the 

atmosphere keep heat from escaping 

the Earth, which is why the 

temperature rises. Many human 

activities create these green house 

gases: natural processes like breathing, 

but also through things like 

deforestation and the burning of fossil 

fuels. Because of this humans are a big 

cause of global warming,"
