Penguin lived way down in Antarctica where
he ate plenty of fish and played in the
snow all day.
His favorite activities were juggling
snowballs and making ice cream cones.
All in all, he was a very happy penguin.

One day when Penguin was sharing a
wonderful strawberry ice cream cone with
his friend Caribou, he noticed that Sly
Wolf was creeping across the snow.
Penguin said, "Caribou, we need to go!"
So Caribou ran as fast as he could and
Penguin slid down the snow into the sea.
"Oh no!" thought Penguin, "My poor ice
cream cone! Sly Wolf will get it all to
himself. If only I could fly, I
could have taken it with me."

The more Penguin thought, the more he
wanted to be able to fly.
So he asked Caribou, Little Fox, and Mouse
to help him build a boat and he sailed
across the sea in search of someone who
could help him learn how to fly.
Caribou, Little Fox, and Mouse waved to
Penguin as he set out on the boat, taking
some snowballs and ice cream with him.

Penguin sailed and sailed until he came to
an island.
"Phew! What a long journey," he thought.
Then he picked up his pail and started
walking along the beach.
"If I keep walking, I am sure to find
someone who can teach me how to fly,"
thought Penguin. And so he walked and
walked and walked down the beach.

Penguin walked the entire beach and had come to
the last bit of sand before he spotted a bird
sitting in a tree.
"Hello there!" said Penguin.
"Hello," said the bird, "You sure don't look
like any bird I've ever seen. My name is
Seagull. What's yours?"
"I'm Penguin; I've come all the way from
Antarctica to learn how to fly! Can you help me?"
"W-w-hat?" said Seagull, "Can't fly? That's the
silliest thing I've ever heard!" Seagull laughed
and laughed.

Seagull was not very helpful, so Penguin
walked down the road. There he met three
little birds.
"Hello, my name is Penguin and I must learn
how to fly."
"We are the Sparrows," said the wee birds, "We
can't teach you to fly, but play with us and
we will tell you how to find the Rooster. He
knows everything."
So Penguin took out his favorite snowballs and
showed the Sparrows how to juggle. Because he
was so amazing and gave them each a snowball,
they told him the Rooster was usually near the
fork in the road.

Penguin left the Sparrows and traveled to the
fork in the road.
"You must be Rooster," said Penguin to the bird
standing in the road. "The Sparrows told me you
were smart and could teach me how to fly."
"My dear, I could no more teach you to fly than
you could teach me to swim. You are a penguin."
"But...if I can't fly, I can't save my ice
cream cones from Sly Fox."
"Save your chatter. You are what you are and
that's that. Now go on."

Penguin sadly made his way to the pond.
"I say," said a giant Peacock, "Why so blue
friend?"
"Rooster says that I can't learn to fly," said
Penguin.
"Oh pish posh. You can do anything if you set
your mind to it. You just need the right
attitude and the right outfit for the job!"
said Peacock.
"Yes! Yes!" cried the ducks in unison.
"The right outfit?" asked Penguin.

"Why yes," said Peacock, "The right outfit goes a
long way in accomplishing anything!"
"I see," said Penguin.
"Let me see," said Peacock as he rummaged through
the chest of hats at his side. "This is just the
thing! It will surely help you to fly!"
"Why thank you! Thank you!" cried Penguin as he
put on Peacock's top hat.
"Now all you have to do is get to a high place and
practice," said Peacock.
"I will," said Penguin and gave the Peacock a
delicious ice cream cone as a gift.
