Meet my friends from China

There are many different languages spoken in
China. Some of them are Mandarin, Cantonese
and Zhuang.
In English, we use the an alphabet made up of
letters A-Z. Chinese languages do not use the
alphabet, they use Hanzi or caligraphy made
up of symbols.
Say Hello in Mandarin: Ni Hao
It is pronounced knee how and is spelled like
this:

"Ni Hao, Timmy," said Lucy, "It must be really hard to learn
how to write Chinese languages."
"Yes, Lucy, but it is part of their culture. If they don't learn
how to speak it and write it, then it becomes very hard to
communicate with each other."

Activity 1
Learn more about languages. Ask you parents to help
you learn more about languages.
Ask them to help you learn how to say hello is your
favorite new language and find out where it is spoken.
Is the language very different than yours?
It is important to understand that language is a very
important part of who you are and your culture. Some
people may even know more than one different
language.

Language is not the only thing that can be different.
Religion is also very important. Religion is the belief in
a higher power. Different cultures practice different
religions.
My friends from India practice a
religion called Buddhism. They go
to a Buddhist temple to meditate
and they believe that things are
always changing.

Activity 2
Ask your parents to explain more to you about the
religion that your family practices.
1. What religion does your family practice?

2. What things do you do differently than others in order
to follow your religion?

3. What religious holidays do you celebrate?

Now that you know more about your religion. Draw
a picture of your favorite holiday that shows how
your family celebrates it.
