This book is dedicated to Zoology's period 3 class and Mrs. Westman!

Frogs are amphibians.
The word "amphibian" means "two lives."
Frogs seem to live two lives because full grown frogs live both on land and in water. Young frogs start out by living only in the water.
Let's learn about the life cycle of a frog!

Frogs begin their life in an egg in the water.
How many eggs a frog can lay depends on the species of frog.
A female bullfrog, for example, can lay as many as 20,000 eggs

Did you know that there are over 4,800 species of frogs all over the world?

After about 21 days in development, a tadpole emerges from the egg. Tadpoles live in water and have gills (like fish) to breathe. They don't have legs, but have a long tail which helps them swim.
Tadpoles eat algae. They are very small and must be very careful of predators. They rely on their camouflage to protect themselves - this means they blend in with their environment to hide from predators. Tadpoles are usually brown, green, or gray.

As 5 weeks go by, the tadpole begins to change.
The tadpole begins to grow back or hind legs, and front or forelegs. But they still keep their tail!
Lungs begin to develop, so the tadpole can get ready for life on land.
Tadpoles may start eating different foods like insects and plants.
