I dedicate this book to my mom because she supported me when I was writing this book no matter what happened.

Early one morning, Jack and his parents got ready to go into the dry, deadly desert. When Jack was packing, he realized that the desert would reach frigid temperatures during the night, so he grabbed a jacket. Jack was a calm and smart ten-year-old boy with black hair. Jack’s parents didn’t know a lot about the desert, other than it was dry and sandy, so Jack mainly did all the preparation. Jack told his parents they should be out of the desert by 8 PM so they wouldn't freeze to death. At 6 AM, Jack and his parents set off into the desert.
When Jack was getting in the Jeep, he asked his parents why they were leaving so early, and they told him," The early bird gets the worm." As Jack and his parents were driving up and down the sand dunes, Jack checked his backpack to see if he packed his bite-proof boots. Jack knew that many poisonous animals come out of the sand in the night when it’s cool. Suddenly, when they were going over an exceptionally large dune, the car flipped over, and only Jack and his backpack survived.
Jack slowly and painfully crawled out of the car after the crash, checking to see anyone else survived. When he realized that he was alone, he spilled a million tears. Jack knew he couldn’t change what happened, no matter how hard he tried. Although he felt the pain stabbing his heart, he knew if he were going to survive he had to build a shelter. Before he could make one, the heat slammed him, and he blacked out, dazed from the heat.
When Jack awakened, he briefly forgot what had happened until he saw the Jeep. Jack was depressed, but he knew he had to move on. When, he finished building his camp, it didn’t look pretty, but it would work. Jack felt like it was a million degrees and had to endure it. He remembered that mammals out in the desert were small, so hunting would just waste his energy. At this point, Jack knew he couldn’t survive these conditions without food and water. Suddenly, Jack screamed. A Gila monster just bit his leg, and he didn’t have any anti-venom on him. He quickly killed the Gila monster before it could bite him again.
The venom quickly infiltrated his body bringing pain everywhere it touched. In the distance, Jack heard a gunshot. He knew that this meant that other people were somewhere near. Jack crawled up to the top of the sand dune, and he saw a truck slowly drive away. As he watched it disappear, he could feel the Gila monster venom sting him like a million hornets. Jack tried to stand up to gather food and water, but every time he fell down. The last time he tried, he heard a CRAAASH, which he realized was his tent falling down! Jack was filled with anger. He knew he would probably not survive the night because he would be exposed to the frigid cold. He also knew that finding water would be close to impossible since deserts receive less than 200mm of rain monthly. Jack knew he was stuck!
