"Friendship is essentially a partnership."- Aristotle

Detective Jévon Payne is on very thin ice with the Castleharbor Police Department. Payne was brash and sarcastic as he refused to play by anyone's rules. Yet, it's that attitude that made him such a good detective. Well, that was until the last little while when his antics got to be too much for his Sergeant to bear. His act had become tiresome and his police work began to suffer. He was getting sloppy and messing up cases for other members of the precinct. He seemed to be more interested in being a celebrity than a cop. Things had finally reached a boiling point as an early meeting on Monday morning was set up with his Sergeant.

"You wanted to see me Sarge?" "Come on in Payne. I'm under a ton of pressure from Mayor Graves. He's not impressed with your antics and thinks that you're bringing the wrong kind of attention to our department. And, unfortunately I tend to agree with him." "But I've been cracking some major cases the past few months." "True but your methods have been less than professional. The Mayor wants you to be fired or suspended but I'm going to give you one more shot." "Thanks Sarge. Nice chatting with you." "Hold up. I'm going to be assigning you a new partner until you start to act more responsibly. His name is Barnabas Abner."

"Wait a second. Did you say Barnabas Abner? I thought he had, you know, expired, departed, kicked the bucket." "Well, yes and no" Sarge replied. "What does that mean?" "It's complicated. You'll see for yourself when you meet him." "Where am I supposed to find this Barnabas Abner anyway?" "Oh, you don't find him. He'll find you." Already upset about being scolded by the Sarge, Payne now had to worry about finding this strange new partner who may or may not be alive. "Good luck Payne. Hope everything works out with Abner. He was and is a good man." "Uh, yeah. Thanks Sarge" a bewildered Payne uttered.

Payne hopped into his car and drove around town waiting to hear from Barnabas. "Might as well listen to some tunes to pass the time" Payne said as he reached for the volume knob on his stereo. But all he got was heavy static. None of the stations seemed to get any reception. "Weird." Soon the lights on the dashboard started to flicker on and off. "You're getting closer" an eerie voice called out. "Who said that?" an alarmed Payne shouted. "Nope. Now you're getting colder, colder, warmer, warmer..." Payne's heart started to race as he began to get the chills. He realized that he was not alone in that car. Turns out that the creepy voice was coming from inside the car!

Payne ended up driving off the road as his car rolled into a ditch. Uninjured, he got out of the car to examine the damage. There was no way he'd be able to get it out of the ditch. As he looked around, he found himself in the middle of dark, creepy forest. Strange noises echoed all around him. "That does it, I'm outta here!" Payne shrieked as ran as fast as he could. "How is everything so dark here? It's one 1 o'clock in the afternoon!" A shadowy figure lurked behind the trees, watching Payne's every move. The detective kept running until he twisted his ankle and fell to the ground. When he looked up he saw a figure standing over him cloaked in darkness. He was staring up a vampire.

"Stay calm Detective Payne. It's me, Barnabas Abner." "But I thought you perished in the line of duty?" "Kinda." "Kinda? What does that mean?" "A few years ago I was working undercover to break up a ring of vampire jewel thieves known as The Black Shadows. After I had arrested the ringleaders of the brood, I waited for backup to arrive. I had let my guard down and as we began loading them into the squad car, I was bitten but a member of the gang that had somehow escaped. Dizzy and confused, I ran off into the woods. I'm not sure what I am anymore so I decided to stay away from the public so I don't hurt anyone."

"So you're a vampire now?" "I prefer the term 'sunlight challenged' but yes, I guess you could call me a vampire. Don't worry, I won't bite you. I was infected with all the usual traits that a vampire acquires except for that whole craving blood thing." "Why is that?" "Um, it's blood. Ewww!" "Why did Sarge want us to partner up?" "The vampire that bit me was never caught. I've been searching for him for generations." "I thought it's only been two years." "In human years but in vampire years, it's been an eternity." "But why put me on this case?" "I needed a partner that had courage, character, a sense of humor, and....." "In other words Will Smith wasn't available." "Bingo!"

"The rogue vampire we're after is named Viktor Strix. He was the enforcer for the brood. He dealt with anyone who challenged The Black Shadows whether it be security guards or fellow vampires. He's planning to unleash a colony of infected bats loose in Castleharbor turning everyone into a vampire." "Yikes! Not sure I can help you with that." "I know you can't. I'll do all the work and you can be my scaredy cat sidekick who comes up with some funny one-liners." "Not so fast. I'm nobody's sidekick. You know the area but we're partners." "Deal" Barnabas replied with a toothy grin. The whole idea behind this unlikely pairing was to teach the detective a lesson in humility. That and nobody else wanted the gig.

Barnabas was able to pull Payne's car out of the ditch all by himself. "How'd you do that?" "One of the perks of being a vampire is that I have superhuman strength." The pair got inside the car and began to drive. "So Barnabas, why is it always dark outside around here?" "They call this part of town 'Little Transylvania' because for years there have been a number of reports of supernatural activities as well as quite a few disappearances by those looking for some late night scares." "No offense, but I sure do miss the sunlight." "Watch out!" Barnabas yelled as a group of bats flew into the car's windshield.
